If the spore print is white or pale, i'd say that's Pleurotus Ostreatus.

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure P.O. don't have a stem.

Pleurotus species are characterized by a white spore print, attached to decurrent gills, often with an eccentric (off center) stipe, or no stipe at all. This specimens look like having a small stipe, that's ok for Pleurotus species.
It could also be Lentinellus ursinus, the bear Lentinellus. It has white spores and belongs in the Tricholomataceae like the oyster mushroom, but i doubt this is the case, as Lentinus ursinus has serrate (saw-toothed) gill edges. It is not known to be poisonous, but I certainly don't recommend eating it.

They could also be dried specimens of Hohenbuehelia petaloides (Pleurotus petaloides).
When you found them did they have a gelatinous layer on the cap ?
Was it found growing on wood chips or wood logs ?

very interesting, I found many Oyster Mushrooms in Maryland this year in October. These look like P. ostreatus in many aspects other than the stem, which is a bit too well-defined. I haven't seen and of the specie that are nearly that well-defined. I think it is possible, seeing that they look very very similar on the rest of their body, the cap and gills are very oyster-like.

Here are some great photographs: http://alphagamma.150m.com/Pleurotus_ostreatus.html

If there was a stem present, it would probably look more like the one in the second picture of the web page.

If you have a mushroom book, use it to make sure the genus is what its supposed to be. Looks like it to me that the genus is right, but it could be another species of Pleurotus. They were growing on hardwood I presume? Did you find any more. Often, the species grows in larger or multiple clusters and sometimes the forest and surrounding area has abundant specimens of it when they are fruiting.

Here are two pictures from my hunt, they are stronly downsized and reduced in quality:

good luck.

No, they were very dry on the cap, almost waxy feeling. They were growing directly out of the top of a piece of oak lying on the ground, a piece of cut wood, growing from the flat face of the cut.

I did not find any others, there were just these two together. I have since gone back to the same locale and searched the area more in depth to no avail, no more that I could locate anyway. Thank you for the link, much appreciated.

I still don't believe it is P. Ostreatus.

What about hypsizygus tessulatus? It has a white spore print, attached but not descending gills, and a stem 2-4" long 3/8-3/4" thick, sometimes enlarged at base; off-center,stout, solid; dry, smooth, sometimes hairy, whitish.
