Mycelium bruising or mold?
    #22350242 - 10/08/15 01:56 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I've looked all over this website and haven't seen anything that looked like my jars so any help is appreciated. SWIM nocd up some WBS jars that were soaked and drained without a drop coming off then PCd for 90m with OI and after 30% colonization of beautiful growth shook the jars to 1. Distribute the mycelium and 2. To see if the jars are harboring any contams. Well this person checked their jars today, 2 days after shaking, and they all have a strange cyan colored haze on some grains. His worry is contams. SWIM knows that mycelium can bruise even from light handling but would appreciate if someone more experienced than him can either put his fears to rest or break the bad news to him. Thanks again guys

Even though i'm still considered new, any colour other than white (and sometimes yellow(metabolites)) are bad. Bruising usually tends to be blue.

That's what he's read. Bruising after shaking is normally ok since it will recover. His issue is the cyan color is systemic throughout the jars. So it's either the mycelium that was distributed is bruised or he stirred up a nasty contam.

Looks like contaminants, if he's hoping it isn't he should isolate it somewhere he'll likely not use in the near future for incubation.

When he first noticed the discoloration he isolated the jars in a separate TIT for safety. He's probably going to let them ride it out and see what happens out of curiosity. Oh well that's mycology. Win some lose some. Cheers man

You don't need TiTs. Room temperature with indirect sunlight (on a shelf) is perfectly fine. I wouldn't go above 77ishF for sure. Just slows down and makes it a better environment for contams. I prefer 70-75.

But yeah that's definitely contaminated. My money's on penicillium. Does your friend have a pocket microscope? He could totally identify it. Maybe even through the glass, wouldn't even have to open the lid.
