Crafting station out of stones upon a "mountain"
    #22349640 - 10/08/15 11:01 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hi guys I'll be building a Crafting station to forge metal upon a high point of my back yard which happens to also be a high point of land in my town.
I've been building a rock wall this summer, and I've stumbled upon an old drawing of a forge, I happened to be going for blacksmithing in college.
I wanted to make a Thread to show some pictures of the spot before I start to clean it up. So far there are about three issues that have presented themselves.
Winter approaches on this mid October day, Rocks weighing half a ton, bulk of "smaller"[200lb] stones are downhill. Clocks ticking.
I was wondering if anyone has ideas as to how to pull stones uphill, you know something innovative like pushing as well as pulling.
I thought to use block and tackle.
Let me share a Kill Bill Katana Sword build while I gather some pictures.

Cool. I'm a machinist by traid, I also like to do some smiting on the side. I built a brake drum style charcoal forge out of some heavy wall steel that was a bad part from the shop and an anvil from a piece of train track. Post some pics of the rock hill and the entry way to the aria.

Well, I have access to the tools and anvil and furnace in exchange for some work and maybe some cash.
I am happy to meet you and welcome to the shroomery forum.
Here are pictures of the obvious pathway and a layout of the pad:

Problems that may be solved, It's hard to show with my lens, but the pathway has plenty of stones just right for the way up whether I'd start on the stairs from the bottom and build up I think is a decent plan.
I also sort have discovered that their are plenty of large flat stones in the platform slightly above the future area of the pad demonstrated with the log spike and my knife.
Heres how I plan to rope up and move around rocks:

Ok, first I would start at the top and work my way down.
I have a bit of experience moving rock around. By far the easiest way is to rent a backhoe. My local  Home Depot will Ren a mini backhoe for about 250 a day.
Having said that here is another idea that worked well for me.
1) go to a wrecking yard and get a hood off of a pickup truck  (or aquire one)
2) get a tow chain from harbor freight
3) weld the chain to the "engine side" of the hood so that you have a V shape.
4) bolt on something that will keep the rock from sliding around. I like milk crates.
Boom a rock sled. Tow it behind a 4x4 in low range.
I made a sketch. As soon as I figure out how to post a pic I will

so I sort of pulled some rocks out and cleared debris:
I'm going to dig this down a foot, took an hour about to do that.
I've made walls but I'm thinking of making it a stone pad without cement.
Plus adding some 2-3foot high walls. Dry stack walling needs a decent amount of stone under the ground.
Interestingly I found river rock up here =D

Sorry I didn't post earlier, didn't get the idea until recently. A pit forge is ideal for this spot. All you need is clay and an airflow source, be it bellows or an electric fan. If you really need to turn up the heat a hair dryer works in a pinch, though powering such a device in the woods would be a huge PITA.
