I'm trying to make an advanced fruting chamber with built in fans on the case itself, I have 12V computer fans and was wondering anyone knew the skimatics of wiring it? I know it involves going to radio shack to buy resistors and such.

All you need is a 12V DC adaptor.

Just about any one of those bulky plugs that always try to take up both outlet spots will work (e.g. phone charger...). They're usually between 5-9 volts but it will work just fine.

You could skip it and get a 120V AC fan from Radio Smack instead.

if you have a computer fan, then chances are you have an old dinasaur computer laying around. jerk the power supply out of it. it should have a plug that connects right up. if not, i'm sure you can figure it out. red goes to red black goes to black etc.

radioshack part #E89061 is perfect. all you have to do is solder it to a plug and wire.

alright I found a computer power supply, i tried wiring the fan's wires to the power supply, there is red, yellow, and black wires on the fan 12 volts. When I tapped them together and plugged in the power supply there was no response. The fan on the power supply didn't even turn on. My guess is without a motherboard the power doesn't fully go through until it is triggered to do so by the motherboard. How should I go about doing this, anyone?

if you got the radioshack fan i recommended, you dont have to use a power supply. you can solder it to a power cord and plug it into the wall.

OK this isnt the safest thing to do, buts its what i did. I took my "HOT" wires (9-12 DCV) and conected my return or "black" negetive wire with the black wire from the fan, then touched the other "HOT" wire and brushed it against the others till i found the right one(s). Worked for me.

this is the thing I was doing that and there was no response and this a brand new power supply from a shop. There are 3 wires on the fan and it says the fan runs on 12V. Yet when I looked it up on the power supply box it says black is return line so its negative, yellow line said it was +12V, and red line said +5V. how is this possible??? The fan says its 12V yet the red line is 5V extra. If I connect the red and yellow at the same time it would equal to 17V! that would burn out the fan motor! HELP!

I'd still recommend a RadioSmack 120v fan (3.5", I think) for $20 and a $2 cord. Or raid an old computer for power supply for your 12v. There are old computers lying around all over the palce, you should be able to find one, as someone else mentioned.

I have 2 80mm computer fans and a power supply that I can't get to work together. I'm beginning to think that i need a motherboard as well, please someone help! I dont want to make it a waste that I bought these items!

Just buy some case fans... and a power AC. (thing that gives power to PC. The case fans should have plugs that look like the ones that plug into your hard drive to power that up...if you know what im talking about. Its very simple. EXTREAMLY simple. Just power the power supply with a plug and whatnot... plug in the CASE fans into the right plugs and turn on.... There you go.

yo man, are you fans the ones with the 3 little pin plug-ins???
If so those are to hook up onto a motherboard
DONT WORRY!!
You can fix this... all you need is an adapter for the 3 pin small plug to plug into. Also you HAVE to have a power supply to get these fans to work of course.
Now go to the store... get your damn power supply. Get the lowest and cheapest one you can find. Because these fans barly use shit for power.
Also ask the computer store people for an adapter to plug into a 3-pin connector to turn the fan into a CASE fan. They will you give you somthing that looks like a big plastic plug at the end. Identical to the power plug that plugs into your hard drive... floppy drive... disk drives and whatnot you choose to power. Once you get the POWER SUPPLE and an adapter for the 3 pin plug in you have now. All that needs to be done is plug it into the plug that looks exacly the same coming out of the power supply. Plug in and turn on and there you go. Hope this helps

I dont even understand why you are going threw all this work man. Its so unbeleiveably simple. You just have to get the correct adapters and plug it into the correct spots. I highly recommend not suadering anything... because with power supplies it gets extreamly confusing considering that there is 50 wires coming out of the damn thing.

taking the power supply out of a computer is not a good method for providing power to a fan, they are big, bulky, dangerous, provide waaaaaaayyyyyy more power then u need, they are loud, and they REQUIRE(saftey) a grounded outlet. i got one of those variable power adapters(2-12v) @ radio shack, i can change the fan speed, and i need to cause the fan im using is super fast... toooooo much cfm.
