How to find suitable land for mushrooms?
    #22346113 - 10/07/15 03:33 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I reside in an area that is highly populated. There is hardly any vast open areas in close proximity. All the vast open land that is in close proximity (the cow fields) just so happens to be private property so I can not & will not venture into these fields. I assume all or most cow pastures that people find mushrooms in are privately owned. So does that mean people who find mushrooms on these forums are venturing into private property? I'm not wanting to blatantly break the law (being in private property) when I'm going to be doing something like picking mushrooms to begin with. So where in the world do I begin to find a good location for picking mushrooms? I would appreciate any tips, advice, or suggestions. Thank you so much.

Use google earth and find some suitable looking land. Ask the farmer for permission to look around on his field (exotic mushroom research, school paper, etc) if you're worried, or use common sense and don't fuck with his cattle or be obvious (not implying anything  )

Where would suitable looking land be? Just large open land with grass? I would mainly be looking for P. Cubensis.

My apologies for double post. I forgot to edit my previous reply.

P cubenis grows in the  tropics or sub tropics, so texas, florida, bascially all southern states except arizona and new mexico cause its too dry.

P cubenis loves cow pies and horse pies, so look for some open field farms that get plently of water and/or rain (use google earth).

And watch out for farmers. They dont like tresspassers at all. if youre ballsy, u can asked to search cow pies from shrooms, but i wouldnt recommend it, unless youre super ballsy.

So P. Cubensis wouldn't just be growing in some random field that don't have cows or horses in it? I found some really vast open land nearby on google maps. (thank you for the suggestion theshrumnub!)

Haha unfortunately I am definitely not ballsy enough to ask a farmer that. I don't think they would take too kindly to me asking if I could find shrooms in their cow pastures. Damn... lucky ass farmers! :frown:

This depends (apart from the farmer's general attitude of course) on how you present
your question(s). If you bring a camera, a field guide, a notebook and a tacklebox, you
can try tell him/her that you're collecting various coprophilic fungi to study under your
microscope. I guess the worst that can happen then is you being asked to leave.

That's true. The only place to find cubensis is in cow pastures?

Yes, if you live in the tropics/subtropics.

Cubes are a dung-loving species in the wild.

Cubeneis love temps between 60F and 80F, anything colder, they will not grow.

Hey LogicaL Chaos. Thank you so much for your advice. I guess I'm going to have to look for other species. Too apprehensive to go into cow pastures and get my ass shot off or get caught by the fuzz... Agh... and I know just the perfect pasture. It's right down the road from me. Fiddle sticks! Too much private property in my neck of the woods.

yeah ive hunted on private land amoung the cows. Its pretty sketch, especially when u see a bull or herd or people that look like land caretakers.

Best to find a field far from houses or busy roads.

Or you could grow your own cubes. Its real easy and costs abour $100 to get started. Once u start, its pretty self substaining if u put the effort in
