My pet elf owl 9
#22346093 - 10/07/15 03:29 PM (8 years, 3 months ago) |
|
|
He is a badass and eats mice, but he is very small tho... has very sharp talons and a strong grip...
I got it since he was an owlet they downed the tree where is nest was and we rescued him... we tried to set it free but he did not go away so we kept him... he recentrly got very sick and i thought he would die (had seizures and everything) but we took it to the vet and he is all nice now

How old is he and does he harass you at night? Is he loud during the night.

For one, it's illegal in most cases to keep native owls in the U.S. You need permits and licenses. Also, owls make terrible pets.
I guess in ops case it's probably ok since he took it to the vet and they didn't say anything, also appears he resides outside of the U.S

he is 1 year old and no he is not that loud... sometimes he sings but its not something that would take your sleep...
In my country there is a saying "when the tecolote sings the indian dies" these species of owl is called tecolote here, and supposedly their singing is a bad omen and means someone is about to die... pure BS though

I am not harping on you or trying to get after you.
Does he ever hurt you with his talons or beak? Do you plan on keeping him forever?
Even if you don't plan on giving him up, I would suggest checking in with some conservationists or someone in the 'know' on how to best care for him?
You really should encourage or try to teach him to hunt.

That owl is pretty bomb. Owls are usually considered bad omens by most native cultures. Not too sure about other cultures though.

I think the omens associated with the owl would be the least of concerns when owning an owl.
There talons rip through flesh and their beaks snap bones, they sleep when you are awake and make noise when you sleep. They need a lot of room and will shit everywhere, training them is very difficult. They live for decades and require some above normal care.
But you know, those omens though.

Mine owl is a tiny species so there is no bone breaking or talon ripping, unless you are a mouse
altough sometimes it clenches very tightly with its talons, and it sometimes hurts a lil bit, but can be handled

That's so fucking cute. Is the owl affectionate at all? Also, do you supplement it's diet or just let it eat the mice in your house?

What a cool little owl. I'd catch a lot of flack if I ever had an owl, but I hope to keep a hawk someday.
There's a few Native cultures that consider Barred owls to be allies. Though they are a respected medicine typically reserved for elders who know how to properly work with them.

If you're qualified to own a hawk, you're probably qualified to own an owl. Owls are just less common because they're stubborn dicks if you don't get 'em young.

i bred siberian gerbals when i was a kid, those fancy ones that cost alot. I ended up with like 50 of them, took them to the petstore and got enough store credits to get me a fancy baby redtail boa there was something special about it like a hybrid or something so its design was different that most. Dam thing died a week later it never ate
was prolly for the best because those things get way to big and strong, plus they are kinda shitty pets its like a goldfish that you take out of the water once in a while
what the hell happened to igunana's? petstores used to always have those things now i never see them at all? out of all the lizards iguana's seemed like the best ones for a pet next to bearded dragons

Bummer.
I had a rosy tail boa as a kid. It wouldn't eat a mouse we got one day, so I kept it..named it Toby and ended up with hundreds of mice too quick. They were a lot of fun though.
