Ugghh. I'm so frustrated for this season. I found 4 small patches of cyans growing in the courtyard at work. There is zero chance of being secretive and picking them without anybody noticing. They're outside of the window of a room which is staffed 24/7... major bummer. I'll have to search around more.
Found in inland Contra Costa County. The weather has been pretty ideal lately. I'm excited to get out this weekend.

How about I give you some advice if you take down that awful pic. You'll come across many woodchip beds that look too new. One reason is that places are still in the process of converting over to woodchip lanscaping, and the other is that existing woodchip beds are periodically replenished. As for the drought, what it means is that most of the woodchip beds you find will be dry.
What you need to do is search and search and search to find those rare woodchip beds that are already established and irrigated despite the drought. When you arrive at a place, find a shaded section and check the woodchips as well as underneath the chips...for the top layer can dry out fairly rapidly. (Not to mention, older decomposing chips might exist under a top layer of newer chips.) Once you've found such a location, then scour the whole place keeping your eyes glued to the ground looking for mushrooms. Pay particular attention to the shaded parts, no matter how small, and right next to plants.
So first you're just hunting for the conditions. Only when you find the latter are you actually hunting for mushrooms. And when you find the former, but not the latter, keep note of the place and revisit it every week or so...for different patches can fruit at totally different times within the season.
Shitty picture gone thanks for the great advice. I didn't look that long but didn't find a single mushroom of any kind. Oh well next time I'll take this into account.

Im on the east coast, but have been watching a cultivated patch with the above mentioned very closely which appears like its wanted to fruit and looks really healthy myc under leaves, but refuses to. But the ovoids right next door in identical climate are florishing with mushrooms which makes me wonder if its gonna happen this year. Would some ice cube trickery be a good idea to help them initiate
I think they fruit around the same time. But I'm having a similar probem with an ovoid patch that fruited (a little) this time last year...tons of healthy mycelium...well irrigated...but no fruits. I'm beginning to wonder whether Bay area ovoids are primarily spring fruiters. About ice cubes, etc., lemme know if you find a trick that works. I haven't succeeded at inducing any patch to fruit.

Things are definitely running late. Lol, and no more rain forecasted for November...yikes! But El Nino is coming near the end of the year, so I think the season might turn out to be one of the best on record.

If you already found cyans, then the season is going great for you. Swoop those up! If you're being watched, make if look like you're just taking pictures. Cut all the stems at the base but leave the mushrooms on the ground. Then when they're all cut, gather 'em all up at once and walk away non-chalantly.
EDIT: My bad, Silky_Johnson! 1/4" tomorrow night!!!

Nice! Those aren't even mature anyway...so you have like a week to plan your heist. Watch for 'em drying out though.
EDIT: Btw, lovely pic...I bet that's an iPhone 6.

stevo said: Thats odd. I have a variety in my patch that originates from Pennsylvania (black pins) spores and one from Oakland, CA which is more cream colored and wavy and the california variety is mainly the one that is fruiting in the fall. The PA variety was the better spring fruiter. What I would do if possible is pile leaves over the patch.
The California and Ohio varieties have the exact same ITS DNA sequence.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/?term=Psilocybe+ovoideocystidiata
What we need to do now is get a good sequence of Psilocybe subaeruginascens from Japan/Java/Indonesia and see if all of these ovoids are actually P. subaeruginascens. There is one ITS sequence in GenBank, but the read is short, just 280 base pairs. If matches ovoideocystidiata 100% except for two ambiguous base pairs.
Also LSU sequences of P. ovoideocystidiata are needed, as there is a 964 base pair long LSU sequence of P. subaeruginascens from Japan in GenBank.

The stray ovoids I posted yesterday are from a patch that put out a flush, albeit a weak one, about a week ago. Those are "greenies." The patch that won't fruit (besides a tiny specimen a month ago) consists of the orange pin variety...if such a thing exists. I'll collect a bunch of dead leaves today and cover the patch tomorrow after tonight's rain. Thanks.

This is my find from 10/29 of this year...already preparing its second flush.

Is that Eucalyptus mulch? I see the leaves... Do Allenii favor Eucalyptus?

I don't know what kind of woodchips those are, but the leaves fell from a tree planted in the landscaping. If I remember correctly, people say that Psilocybes, including allenii, don't favor eucalyptus.

In mushrooms demystified it says that P.Cyanescens is "fond of Adler and eucalyptus".
