Ovoids definitely smell of cubensis. At a massive patch I found last spring you could smell them from 20 yards away if the wind was right. Gross. I've never noticed that much of a similarity in smell to any of the other wood lovers in the PNW.

man, I have been having a hard time in the n. bay this season. old spots where I would always find alenii are not fruiting, and I have been checking religiously. Today I came across what could be cyans, but they are somewhat dry so it's hard to tell. what do you guys think?

Thanks silky, I'm just wondering since I've never ID'd cyans before and I don't really see a bluing reaction like with alenii. could that be because they are partially dried out?

could be, that threw me off too. the 2 that you can see the gills on in picture 3 look a little off to me, those might be something else.
im sure theres people better at identifying cyans than me in here. i always look around the outside of the cap, and theres usually a blue ring around the very edges of the cap. but yeah the ones i find bruise blue 99% of the time. but they always seem to have that blue ring around the edges of the cap.

I appreciate your opinions, let me know what you think.

Hard to tell from that pic. Is it super delicate and fragile?
Here's a few shots of some Galerina I found earlier in the season that look a little bit similar:

Around the same time I found some Tubaria furfuracea that also had pointy caps:

EDIT: Also, how do they smell? The ovoids I found this season had, especially when wet with rain, an unmistakable P. cubensis smell.
Yea I think Galerina is the ticket. Here is another shot. So are Ovoid stems white? Absolutely no bluing in these as well.

Those SF ovoids are smaller and different in color compared to the eastern US ovoids, looks like a different species. I wonder what causes this? I think all ovoids outside of the eastern US are transplanted. With the high concentration of psyconauts in SF, there are probably going to be new species of Psilocybes from other areas popping up as well.

That is caused by environmental conditions.
The ITS sequence of San Francisco ovoids matched 100% the ITS sequence of Ohio ovoids, not even a single base pair of difference.

Definitely not.

I haven't seen any evidence for this.

Thanks Alan. I saw a thread discussing a cultivated patch of ovoids in Europe. From what I recall, within a couple of years, the cultivator found new patches 10 miles from his/her original bed. This person said it was spreading easily to new areas close by.
So it appears this mushroom is the most naturally widespread active Psilocybe known in the US. It is amazing how adundant they are, only being well known for a relatively short time. One change that has occurred in it's favor is the increasing use of wood mulch instead of bark mulch. I visited a wood products supplier, and he was double shredding hardwood trees for use in dyed mulch. I was told they use dyes used in pet food, and that colored mulch was the biggest seller. It used to be, all you could find was bark mulch.

There are still some out there but, yeah, things are winding down. It was another challenging season with unusually cold temperatures in December and tons of wind (seemingly) after each rain storm. Most of my known spots didn't fruit at all. But the few that did fruit were enough, for me anyway.
