Believe it or not this patch had mature caps 2 weeks ago! No idea when it first started fruiting. Hardly any mushrooms in the Bay Area right now, but these are up. Irrigated area of course.

mod edit - hunting forum rule:
5. Do not make threads or posts discussing or reporting the weather. This includes complaining about the weather, asking if the current weather is "good for shrooms", or how long to wait after rain fall to go hunting. If it has rained within the last 1-10 days, and the temperatures are correct for the type of mushroom you're looking for, and the time of year is correct then it is certain that that the mushroom you are looking for is growing.

im a total noob when it comes to hunting should i start looking while its still raining, or just after it stops?
A great time to start hunting will be a few days after the rain, when things are dry enough again that you can discern which woodchip beds are receiving artificial irrigation. For those will be the only spots to fruit Psilocybes after this initial rain. Keep note of all such locations and revisit them periodically, because they won't necessarily fruit right away or simultaneously. The more rains and favorable conditions we get, the more your searches should expand out from irrigated and shaded locations.
If you want a headstart, take the next couple days to read several of the previous years' Bay area threads from beginning to end. Take notes. And when you begin hunting, and you come home empty-handed and discouraged, read through your notes and some of the threads again to make sure you're still hunting correctly.

Checked my cyan patch today. Only to find that it has been covered by mulch. Looks like it's be suffocated. Murderers! Here is the patch that was covered. This was last season. Makes me wonder if the businesses knew I was picking there. It's the only area covered
Found a few cyans nearby. Will come back in a week to check on them

Hey guys,
is it even worth searching the Sac valley for actives? Lets say roughly 50 miles from the bay.
Obviously it's too dry at the moment, I was thinking about the possibility of a wet year.

50 miles from the bay going east would be fairfield, vacaville area. I've seen people have found actives that far.

Yes it's worth it, I bet there's some growing there right now. Look for woodchips that receive artificial irrigation and, within that, those rare spots that stay moist because of shade from buildings, bushes, trees, etc.

How far inland could one reliably find them? Where's the real cutoff?

It can't hurt to look anywhere you feel like looking. Id wait a few weeks- until the rain hits to determine if places are worth coming back to. I'm planning a day around sac -before I come back to the Bay Area around thanksgiving. I've never taken the light rail or any sacramento transit system so the exploration should be interesting.
They grow as far south as SoCal too.
Alot of dryness and no sign of anything fungiful today on a 10 or more mile bike ride around the west bay.
I think before leaving to the bay(Saturday) primodia might have been forming at a cultivated patch at home, ill be checking again tomorow
