Way to go first time poster.

David. That first picture of the Sweet sweet Cyanescens, in your last post. Beautiful specimens.

Those three fared the best of the whole lot. They could've gone a few more days but I didn't wanna take any chances with 'em...we had 30% humidity yesterday!

Update... I went back this morning to locality #3 to collect more of the Allenii patch I found yesterday. (The last pic in my original posting).

By the way, all three localities are in the South Bay - Cupertino and Sunnyvale.

It was very cold this morning, with below-freezing temps and a lot of frost showing on the way to the site. I was worried that the mushrooms would be frozen, and I know little about what effects that might have. But, lo, microclimates happen! And the shrooms were in pretty decent shape, despite the cold. I collected a fair number, and then went to exit the complex, via a new path.

And I located another patch along the way!, larger than the first one, and intermingled with Ivy, which seems to have protected these specimens from the cold. Furthermore, when collecting here, the bed where things are popping is raised to about waist level, so that you don't even have to bend over to collect! Here's the group shot after washing:

I am becoming truly impressed with how widespread, common, and plentiful the active wood-loving Psilocybes are, tight here in my home town. Quite a surprise. And the ID is actually pretty straightforward. Apparently, if:

  1. The specimen is hosted on wood chips;
  2. The specimen exhibits blueing when bruised;
  3. The stipe is relatively small in diameter, white and fiberous looking toward the top. and often spontaneously bluing.
  4. A purple-brown spore print.

The worst case is that its a non-toxic non-active; but it is most likely an active.

The above is new lore to me. I don't believe that anybody had come up with this rule of thumb back in 1977, when I was very lucky to attend the Second International Conference on Hallucinogenic Mushrooms, in Port Townsend, Washington.

I will never forget shaking Albert Hoffman's and Gordon Wasson's hands.... or Andrew Weil passing out pine nuts at breakfast.

Lo and Behold, I think I just found a picture that has me in it:

Excellent drmaturin! And your finds are inspiring!

It seems like people have been doing much better in the areas around the city than in SF proper, but maybe that's just me not finding many myself (I also made my first finds this year, but not nearly as impressive as yours). I've been in the bay area for 15+ years but until last winter as far as I knew all magic mushrooms came from cow fields or cultivation - I had never heard of wood-lovers. Being older does have certain advantages for hunting, mainly that no one pays much attention to me!

Psilocybe cyanescens. 12/27/15. Brisbane. New find.

Part of today's 'Brisbane to the Peninsula' hunting trip and known spot tour. What's crazy is that I found these while my gf was a distance away and seconds after saying to myself...no shit..."It'd be great if I could tell her, 'I just found a big patch of guess what...cyans!'" True, I had to leave out the "big" part, but an awesome coincidence nonetheless! Found in the midst and along the periphery of a bed of ice plants.

Bonus)

Peziza repanda at the same general location.

Nice finds david. Bout to go out there to pick up a tool ticket I wonder if it would be to late to find a nice cluster? That would be perfect.

David it's like you can't not find them! We went a bit south today and found a grand total of one and about a half allenii in a rather obvious spot:

I just hate coming home empty handed.

You guys are so lucky. Such amazing photographs too. I've got one last ditch azurescens hunt in the coming days in Oregon.. and you folks are swimming in them.

So happy to see so much love though! For fellow man and the planet and it's ecosystems. You guys and gals are heroes and it's amazing to experience all of this.

Damn, David! You and Dys in this, and the PNW thread respectively are immense inspirations. Amazing instincts- and skills. Holding it down and teaching the rest of us in the process. Only finds in the sunny north this year were a couple of gym luts- and didn't even know what they were until days after photoing and walking on! It's been a learning year. Maybe next year I'll have the blues come fall.

Thank you both- and to all of the others, in both threads for the information, guidelines, inspiration and gorgeous photos. More familiar with the PNW thread- so, Randall, Beta, Skagit, Asta, and WSA are those right off the top of my head, but I know I'm missing some.

Hypothetically speaking - and I apologize if this is skirting any rules- if one was in the Bay Area and only had tomorrow to go out to survey and scout for some of the more interesting local mycological specimens, where would you all recommend? The city? East Bay? South Bay? The Peninsula? Any city suggestions (if that's not asking for too narrow of an area, of course)?

Thanks again you guys- we all aspire to have the foraging talents that you do.

Watch the weather for all places. I like to look 3 days prior and 3 days projected; pulling up climate data for trends also helps (albeit kinda).  Google Earth is also your best friend. Only way to know is to get out there. Heck, go to two places one day and two places the next. Piss poor planning has kicked my ass and wasted time, money and travel.

Around Thanksgiving there was a 10 degree variation, then a near frost, so instead of 48 to 72 hours for optimal fruiting, I gave it six days instead and it paid off quite well.

Best advice I can give outside of go have some fun and see cool areas!!

Dys- Good call on the 3 day projection- wish I had been able to find a place that mapped that for multiple cities/towns simultaneously but I've definitely made my own tables in lieu of a map overlay of the data I want.

Multi day multi location searches are totally the way to go. That's the strategy back at home. In the bay though- Only down here for tomorrow though I'm afraid, then it's back again. Google earth is something I've heard of using - tried a few times-  maybe I just don't know how to apply the tool properly.

Found some gorgeous specimens back home (though none of the Ps genus this year). Laccaria amethysteo-occidentalis, huge fleets of A. muscaria (with caps the size of dinner plates- I'll have to make a thread for the photos once I'm back home), and Sarcoscypha coccinea Are some of the most recent standouts. Love going out and looking. Guess tomorrow we'll just listen for the song and follow the tune!

P. allenii and P. cyanescens. 12/27/15. South San Fransisco. New Finds.

1)

I came upon this small woodchip bed which at first looked barren except for a few inactives, but on closer inspection noticed that each little planted tuft of vegetation had a single allenii occupying it. I can't help but think that with another round of good rains and the appropriate weather the whole bed'll be replete with fat juicy specimens.

2)

I found this patch of cyans a ways away at the same general location. Many'll gasp in horror that I clipped everything down to the smallest pin...but you should understand that right now throughout the Bay Area exist very unfavorable conditions for mushrooms, at least Psilocybes. I decided it'd be best to rid the patch of the entire flush in order to preserve its energy for a fruiting in more favorable conditions.

Bonus)

Two patches of Gymnopilus in Brisbane and San Mateo, respectively. I'm actually not too certain about the first one. Anyone?

-----

Aykaye47 - It's certainly not too late in the season, for at many locations the season's barely begun. The problem, however, is that the weather is presently awful, making finds more rare and often consisting of beat up specimens. But if, in these conditions, you spend several hours searching in the right kinds of places you'll still have a decent chance of turning up something.

BigLaughingME - Your kind words were encouraging and a pleasure to read (as were yours, Dys, if you're reading this!) Currently, probably all parts of the Bay Area are equally bad for hunting...but, hypothetically, if you only had tomorrow to hunt, I'd personally recommend just south of the city, the Peninsula, or the South Bay. But that's not based on any actual facts, and you could just as easily step out in the East bay or North bay and score a find the first place you look. After all, Bay Area hunting is a lot about micro-climates and this is all the more true right now in such unfavorable weather.

DR- thanks! I'll do some more research before heading out tomorrow.
We're here saying goodbye to some family members who may not be with us next holiday season so it's a very short trip. In this afternoon, out tomorrow evening.

As we're driving about 26 hours round trip to spend just over 24 hours in the bay- we figured we'd be scouting where the season was beginning (as back home it's winding down)... And apparently happened to arrive at exactly the wrong time for fungal hunts .

Thanks again for the advice and all the work you've put in. Thanks also for taking that poor kitty into your home. I remember seeing that post a while back while checking out the beginnings of the bay's fall season and thought what a wonderful thing that was to do. Cats are great- and taking one in who wouldn't have survived without your intervention is even better.

And at the risk of plagiarizing Skagit - keep them gorgeous shots going!

Thanks, SkagitHunter, I'll be trying!

On a general note, lemme take this opportunity to suggest that I might've been wrong in clipping all the pins at the last find pictured above...for now that I look closely at the weather forecast, it appears that not only are the strong winds subsiding for a time, but also the horrendously low humidity. I mean, don't get me wrong, 50-60% humidity is not very conducive to mushroom health, but coupled with winds below 10 mph, mushroom tissue can resist shrivelling and dying. It's not a very big deal...but I kinda regret it now.

BigLaughingMe - Ah, so it wasn't hypothetical! I wish I could offer you more detailed advice, but I'd be afraid that it'd so just happen to lead you to finding nothing. This, however, seems safe to say: 1) check as many places as you can and don't give up until you have zero time left, and 2) at any woodchipped location at which you find mushrooms at all, no matter the species, don't leave until you've checked every square foot.

Thanks for the encouragement and about our cat...And good luck!

Nat'l Weather Service news = :frown:

But on a positive note: gotta give props to my new myco pal for showing me one of his spots. First actives I've seen this year, better than none.

To the other n00bish hunters...  been learning that the more ground you cover, the better your odds. I used to stop and poke around extensively under bushes, ivy, etc. but in reality it's the guys that cover a lot of ground that do best. Sometimes it's hard because I just know I'm passing some hidden treasure but spending 10 minutes meticulously combing through 5 square feet is not only a bad use of time, it's a good way to call attention to yourself.

Also: totally surprised that anybody finds anything in GGP, but right on to those that do. It's been kick city pretty much everywhere I've looked.

Road trip might be in order.
