P. allenii. 12/8/15. Berkeley. New find.

This patch sits in the front yard of a house. Coincidentally, the husband and wife owners were arriving home just when I spotted the patch. The encounter went somethin' like this:
"Excuse me. Hi. Does this happen to be your house?"
"Yes it is."
"Oh cool. Do you think it'd be possible for me to take some pictures of these mushrooms right here and afterwards to cut 'em and take 'em?"
"Yes, that'd be fine. I usually come out here and dump scraps but I don't think those are from any mushrooms that we've had."
"Yeah these are actually the exact kind of mushrooms I've been hunting for all morning."
(wife) "Cool!" (back to husband) "What species are they?...do you know?"
"Yes they're Psilocybe allenii."
"Psilocybeallenii...that's the species?"
"Well Psilocybe is the genus, and allenii is the species."
"Ah, that's neat. Yeah go right ahead, we don't mind at all. Be our guest."
"Thanks, I really appreciate it. I post these photos to an online community where we all mushroom-hunt and egg each other on."
(wife) "That's so cool...you'll be famous."
"Well the mushrooms will...but don't worry, I won't tell your address."
(wife laughing) "You're funny!"
-----
I wish I'd remembered to mention that I'll be back for the mushrooms later. I'm on a seven hour walk through Berkeley today while my car's at the dealership...and I certaintly don't wanna be walking around all day with fresh allenii. I'm now celebrating my find by relaxing for a few minutes and treating my body to a delicious organic raw kale dish from Cafe Gratitude.

Thanks, yeah I'm having a great time out here...especially since I just found another patch! I think it was the sweet good luck brioche from Cheese Board I stuffed myself with right after the kale!
P. Cyanescens. 12/8/15. Berkeley. New find No. 2.

A small delicate fruiting from what appears to be a rather sizable patch. People were comin' in and out of the building...I just wanted to grab one and say, "Look at these cute little cyans!"

Yesterday and today I took the the streets so to speak ala DavidR style, yesterday the northbay and today SF again... yesterday unfortunately was unproductive barely any fungus period....
Today I met up with a great head I met at the Fungus Fair and we hit up a SF Park on federal property for about 5 hours today it was fun, we enjoyed chatting all things fungus as we strolled stooped, trolled kicked and kneeled our way around. Last year this time I was finding fungus everywhere I looked, this year to date has been a lot dryer here is SF significantly. We did stumble upon some prime habitats however to our disappointment all we turned up were lots of indicator mushrooms but no active's. as close as we got and probably was the highlight of that locale was the Laughing Jim trio was found.
Seen here

A little later we stumbled upon this outcropping

and then these cool looking Geastrum's aka Earth Flowers
Shortly after the above find we were confronted by the Federal Park Service Police who were very curious to what we were looking for...... luckily for us we had no actives in our possession at the time they stopped and questioned us, we told them we were fungus geeks an a part of the local mycological society. They kinda rolled their eyes at us and we disappointed when I opened my bag to show them just one lonely laughing Jim, the female officer was sure she was onto a bust, the look on her face as she began to put on her rubber gloves and ask us if we had any fungus in our possession. Priceless. Always a good rule even when you do locate actives especially when in parks or other regulated areas to NEVER harvest your find the first pass.... You want to case the patch just like a robbery and make your move when it's safest for you and your fungus, you don't want to get caught OR give up your patch to a possible onlooker etc... Getting back to my car I was feeling the agony of defeat , two days of hard hunting and my patches from last season have yet to produce, I'm 0/4 so.... with that said, I made haste back to my local park and gave it a quick scan before sundown in a spot where I knew from last year there was a lot of non active activity and perhaps some actives I was unfamiliar with. Last season was my fist season actively looking for actives so I narrowed my scope and just focused on Allenii's and was fairly successful IMHO although I was intrigued and inspired by some of you more experienced foragers who were also finding cyans and other actives as well, so in the off season I brushed up on the cyan game and hoped that this season I could add one more active to my knowledge base.
I guess it paid off because just before I called it a day, I found these gravy wavies , They're a little on the young side, small and tender still but a close inspection of the patch area indicates that this patch is just beginning to fruit and should continue for a while hopefully. I pinched just a couple of the larger specimens for a spore print and a bruise test, although I am fairly confident they're indeed active p. cyan's

Today happened as it was supposed to happen, seems as though it always works out that way, if it was easy it wouldn't be as fun, the search is what makes it rewarding...
So I'm successfully on the board for my second season, Eh OH!!!

Just started looking this year and can't help but feel like I'm looking a bit odd creeping around buildings and chipped areas. Luckily haven't had a run in yet with peeps. Funny this one worked out and you told them straight up.
Still no finds in Livermore. Just a bunch of big white and portobello looking things.

Funny, was just having a conversation about this yesterday.
Talking on your cell phone is a decent pretense; putting on a paid gardener's outfit would probably work pretty well in many places.

finally found some mushrooms in my backyard. I know there not active but atleast its a sign that theres atleast enough moisture for some kind of mushrooms. Gonna go hunting later.
Can anyone make a quick ID of these? I know there not active, just curious as to what species i found.
the caps vary from a red to a grey depending on their age, white gills, growing on soil/grass and possibly dog poop.

Went out this morning with just my DSLR and my eyes, hoping to just take pics of every fungus I saw. I sure got my eye full seems the recent moisture and cool off and kicked off the cyan fruiting. Like I stated previously my noob ass has been studying up in the off season and I'm confidently out for Cyans and Allenii this season! All these photo'd were left as is, with the exception of about 10 randoms that were either in risk of being trampled or past their prime and on their way out. before leaving them I gave them a nice blanket covering of the leaf debris that were surrounding them.
How many Cyans do you see?

Question for the more experienced Cyan foragers, does the local habitat and environment play a factor in the mature size of the fruiting bodies? I have observed some that are on the small side that visually appear to have matured full in their height and cap maturity although they are quite small, wondering will they "grow up" or perhaps the habitat dictates the mature potential of the species?
Here are the rest of the pics, the species itself is gorgeous.

here's a nice banner bar:

Happy hunting everyone.

Psilocybe allenii. 12/9/15. Berkeley Cal. University campus. New finds.
I couldn't resist the temptation of comin' out to Berkeley for a second day! This time, however, I was reminded of that one really annoying thing about the place...the damned parking situation. 2 hour parking, 2 hour parking, 2 hour parking,...yeah I get the point! As I was driving a rental today, I ended up just sayin' fuck it.
1)
A single specimen apparently growing from a mound of dying grass. When I pulled the thing up, Jesus H. Christ was it way down in there!
2)
A darling little patch I nearly crushed under my feet. I gave 'em a sip of my spring water to make up for scaring 'em. Sorry, little buddies!
Bonus)
A well hidden patch of deadly Pholiotina.
I wish I could post a video. I recorded a squirrel carrying a full-size apple...it climbed up a tree with it and proceeded to eat the thing!

Hello All,
Starting hunting in 2012. This forum has been a huge help, both in my introduction into this hobby as well as the progression of my knowledge and skills for identification. It has been a while since I have posted, so I thought I would contribute and share my recent finds. My first find of the season was up in Long Beach, WA (I'm sorry if I am breaking forum rules since they are not from the bay, but I am a Bay Area native and the remaining finds are from the North Bay) to Marin County. Take a gander.
Location - Long Beach, WA Species - Azurescen

Location - North Bay Species - Cyanescen When I found these, they were black and wind burnt. I took DavidReishi's advice and covered them with wet leaves and dumped more water on them.

Just checked them today and they seem to be recovering (except for one patch which was uncovered somehow)

Location - North Bay Species - Alleni (Salamander Included!)
Found one of these patches (3 shown) within in feet of the cyan patch. A first time for me finding both species such a short distance apart.

Cheers!

I think it has more to do with the amount of rain than anything else. If we get a seriously rain storm, you'll see tons of fatties.

mmmm... maybe I'm an optimist, but I see 11, possibly 12. I circled them:

how did I do? (Do we have to wait for spore prints?)
nice photos!

1)
Breakfast of champions. As mentioned before, this little cyan spot from last year has so far produced better this season than it did last. How can that be? Three words: Irrigation. Control. Valve.
2)
The view this morning of one of the allenii spots from last year that I found fruiting days ago on my Known Spots Tour. It's at a location that's frequented by teenagers...thank goodness they don't know a damn thing about anything.
3)
A couple non-active shots from today.
AmatuerHunter - I'm glad the tip worked for you...though I must say, I never would've guessed that those blackies could make such a recovery! As far as I'm concerned that constitutes a discovery! Also, are you gunna hit up the PNW again next year? If so, got any more room?
