It's Known-Spot Tour Day! I just checked four spots that haven't shown any activity yet this season. Three...nada. But one's up!

I couldn't believe the pins had some older companions. The look of the latter is because they'd begun to dry and then got re-wetted. Cleared the nasties outta there. On to my best producing spot from last year!...over a pound dry!

Please don't take this wrong: It seems that there is a lot of fruits being taken before there mature. In the PNW it's common practice to wait until at least the caps open up and have a chance to drop spores before harvesting. Is it because your spots are so spread out that when your there you grab what you can because you wont be back for a while? Ive heard of people gettin beat up for takeing small mushrooms(At least bitch slapped). But, then again. I'm sure the thug patch protector took same said small ones when the coast was clear. Guess i was just thinking out load with my fingers. Hope you all had a great weekend. Sometimes i miss living in Hayward. But never miss Richmond.

The big producer was awoken from its slumber!

First I got teased by some kind of yellow Mycena growing directly where I found some allenii last season. I put 'em right where they belong...in the gutter!!! J/k. Seeing no sign of any allenii, I scuttled over to cyanville.

What a surprise! A couple young beauties and a few healthy pins (the latter not shown), along with a number of specimens in various stages of rotting. It's the same pattern I've been finding for a couple days now...caused by the ridiculous conditions we've been having up until now. That is, a little bit of rain once in a long while immediately followed by complete and utter dryness. Hey nasties, look over there...clip!
Only a couple hours of sunlight left. Onward ho!

Tahoe - Why would you be looking for places to spawn in downtown San Francisco?
why not? I do it so people like you can find new patches. Just following in the footsteps of the hippies of the late sixties. And who knows. Maybe one day you will be thanking me after you find some azurescens. I bring spawn most of the time when I am hunting. Then I bury a few handfuls of spawn in spots that look suitable.
Well how selfless of you!...Thank you! You should plant a little colored flag at the spawned spots so I can know if I find one. It'd be pretty cool if I did!

Don't worry, I won't take it wrong! I'm not actually harvesting...more clearing. I don't want patches wasting their time and energy growing nasties to maturity. As far as I'm concerned, if the cap's blue it's already been compromised. Almost all those immature specimens you see me clipping are headed for one place...the dustbin!

The dust bin? Blend them up in water, strain, and then put them in a spray bottle and paint the town blue in suitable habitats that don't have any active mushrooms.

I generally throw the less than ideal fruits in my garden, plenty of substrate out there. Trash can definitely seems like the wrong place for em...

Awww...damn. I just reached my weekly upload limit before getting the rest of today's pics uploaded. Well here's the two that managed to make the bus:

This little cyan spot from last season is the only spot so far doing better than last year...probably because I found the irrigation control valve and've been recently letting the fucker run for up to thirty minute at a time. The fruits still got several days left in 'em.

Ok, ok, relax everybody. I was speaking figuratively...and in hyperbole. I've never actually thrown mushrooms away. What I consider not up to my standard I keep aside...most likely to give away to the hippie-bums in Berkeley. (By way of exception, black rotten specimens I will chuck.) The point I was trying to make was that when I clip fruits that aren't yet mature, I'm usually doin' it not for the sake of those fruits, but for the sake of the patch's immediate future. As for why I choose not to spawn, please see the discussion already taken place above.

Seems a little strange that you have 0 problems wasting and taking gallons of water everyday(slightly immoral), yet take an ethical stance on spawning(which is arguably why they're so widespread in the Bay Area).

I don't take an ethical stance against spawning. Also, I think you're more than a little mistaken if you believe that spawning is the reason why Psilocybes are widespread in the Bay Area.

Fuck yeah! Thanks, Alan!
1)
A couple more shots of the little cyan spot from last year. In the second pic you can see a bunch of new pins...that's from nothing other than recently running the irrigation!
2)
Some fruits at the cyan patch that got raped by Drege last year. The last pic shows how to keep cut specimens fresh if you're gunna be traveling with 'em for a while. Of course never do this if the specimens have already begun to dry out.
3)
Oh hello there! This was scene today at the cyan patch that was the first of last year's spots to fruit this year. (The first flush, posted previously, was killed by dry wind.) Today there were at least a couple dozen brand new pins. After lookin' at 'em I started to drive home, but suddenly said "fuck that," turned the car around, drove to the neighboring business's water faucet, filled up some bottles, and doused the patch with a nice four gallons of water. Whew...now I can sleep easy tonight.

The mushroom fair was great, and the hunt afterwards was even better:

I sampled a little less than 4 grams wet last evening and had a very enjoyable (level 1) time. Alas, it's back to work for me -- but I'm looking forward to a long walk at lunch today!

Big up to all the folks from the Fair. Had a great time, learned A LOT (got to see the annulus on a Galerina up close!) and meeting y'all was the best. Grub was good too. Onion wine - who knew?
Looking forward to hunting tomorrow too...
BTW, did a little hunting out at a certain aquatic park type locale in San Mateo and while I didn't find any actives, I did find a shitload of indicator species and some that were new to me like Hebeloma crustuliniforme (thanks to Alan for the ID on that.) Turns out the Fungus Fair used to be held at that very spot, so there are probably some interesting 'legacy spores' floating around.

Today's a great day out there to be lookin'! When you find a promising location, don't hesitate to walk around doin' the old man stoop. A walker set on the lowest setting can prove very helpful...but don't forget the tennis balls. Here's a pic from last year of me in my mushroom hunting disguise:

Chulutu I know what you mean -- that was actually my second find yesterday. My first was two shrooms about 3 yards from those. After I picked the two, I took photos of the surrounding area so I could find my way back to it, then decided I needed to look a little harder -- and there they were. I came really, really close to missing them. And again, it was finding indicator species (Leratiomyces ceres) in the vicinity that made me give the spot a good looking over to begin with. I clipped them carefully and left the little ones, maybe the slugs won't eat them all...
