Just stopped at the infamous downtown cyan spot, turned on the irrigation, and nothing happened. Lol, either they got sick of me turning it on or it was time to 'winterize' the system. Oh well...it was great while it lasted. Hopefully all the youngsters can make it on their own.
Silky - Nice...were those allenii at the same spot as the cyans?
Torcutt - Are you sure you're looking in the right kinds of places?

Gymnopilus ventricosus. Not active, not bruising green.

No sign of anything growing in Livermore cow patches. Could need more days of warmth? Anyone have luck in the Bay Area with cow patches of late?

You're looking in the wrong habitats....You won't find any actives growing in cow dung around here.....
....and the actives around here tend to fruit in cold weather, not warm.
These are the two main active species in the area....
Psilocybe allenii
Psilocybe cyanescens

I just found a really convincing lookalike (at least at first glance) a few yards from one of this year's allenii finds.

My guess is Galerina autumnalis.

To me, these look more like Tubaria sp. Something like T. furfuracea.

Man, I've checked about 8 spots that produced over the last 4 years and have not seen so much as an indicator species. Only one area has produced all of 18 little cyans. This season ain't starting so well for me.

That looks more like Tubaria furfuracea, which is edible. It has been over 30 years since anyone died from mushroom poisoning while looking for actives - so while death can happen, it's not common.

I'm fortunate enough that lately that my schedule is quite flexible and will most likely take a trip up to the North Bay on Monday and check up on last year real producers... I'm remaining confident. Was up around twin peaks today taking in the views, could see entire Bay Area, look like the south and east bay are getting lots of moisture...

Most of my spots from last year aren't producing anything yet either. I wouldn't worry about it though...I think we're gunna start getting lots of moisture soon. Then everything'll explode all at once. The thing to worry about, if the drought continues, is next year. No El Nino to save our asses. Gulp!

Monday'll be a good day. But don't just go to your known spots...cover as much new ground as possible. One method is, on your way to your destination, safely keep your eyes peeled and stop to search at every location that looks like it has potential. It might take you forever to get to your destination, but it can be an effective method if you're at a loss on how to plan your hunt.
