The infamous downtown cyan spot this morning. With a bout of cold dry air arriving tonight I'm having to consider a major harvest later today. Arghhh...I think I feel a nervous ulcer comin' on!

11/25/15. East Bay. New finds.
1) 2) 3)
P. allenii. These are three different patches at the same general location.
4)
P. cyanescens. At the same location as above. This patch isn't producing a whole lot yet, but pins extend out here and there in every direction for a few yards. Most of them, however, have low moisture damage. Hopefully it'll be a great producer later in the season.
-----
I'm thinkin' to come back later today with a dozen gallons of water and a big bag of leaves. With some luck that'll allow these patches to survive the cold and dry blast we're about to get. Take advantage of the dry spell, people! Get out there and find those irrigated locations! The above finds are a result of doing just that...today was a return visit!

I'm on the board! First find of the season. A patch that was prolific with small fruits last year, start to fruit again. In SF. YAY!

Parisian_goldfish said: those things look like theyre gonna starve next year. add some chips next spring to make sure they come out in full force
Hey thanks for the tip! I'm not sure what's going on with the substrate right there. I think maybe someone dumped a bunch of potting soil overtop of the chips...I say this because many clusters sprung out of what looks to be pure dirt. Or maybe below the surface is a mixture of soil and woodchips. (The whole landscaping rises to a foot high mound.) Anyway, I would like to replenish the woodchips if such a thing is practicable in severe drought. I don't remember it raining even once last spring. If you've got more to say about it, I'd love to hear.
yeah, your other pics of that patch look very nice
the only reason I mentioned that was because I saw no chips, and the same thing happened to me this year with the patch in my yard. the cyans had eaten up all the chips throughout the year and I probably got less than half the fruits i got last year (I didn't cultivate it, it just showed up). I've actually lost numerous patches in my years of hunting because I didn't even think about having to add wood chips.
somewhat off topic, does the humidity in SF make it a really good hunting city? seems like you guys have a lot of diversity down there

1)
Fearing the arrival of the cold and dry blast, I harvested around 75% of the infamous downtown cyan spot.
2)
A shot of the second flush of the 10/29 allenii find. I put it to bed tonight under a nice blanket of Japanese maple leaves.
Goodnight!

Still pretty quiet here around my neck of the woods. But one of my huge patches is thick with mycelium. It should only be a few days before things start going crazy up here in the North Bay.

Happy thanksgiving folks,
My phone had mechanical issues this morning preventing me from taking pictures of these dried out cyans and pins(before covering them with leaves). One of the big patches I found a 2 years ago also has a few pins , but the rest are probually still underground. As met ironed before , most patches are two weeks behind.
Oh yeah , most of the ones i seen had possibly been trampled by dogs because there was evidence of near by shit. I love humans, for not picking up their shit.

Today:
1)
Progress of a patch of P. allenii from last year. I didn't make it out to the patch yesterday to try to protect it from the dry cold...obviously it didn't really need the help. I think surviving low moisture might just be allenii's "specialty." Left 50-60 specimens to continue growing.
2)
The patch of P. cyanescens that Shroomery member 'drege' raped last year is finally trying to fruit again.
3)
Here's what the patch of young P. allenii pictured last night looks like today. It appears to be enjoying the layer of fresh Japanese maple leaves.

I wish someone would write a detailed woodchip replenishment tek.
Humidity in SF? Never heard of it...is it some kind of nightclub? J/k. Humidity here is more or less a thing of the past. Right now throughout the Bay area the humidity is around 35%. The new pattern is that we get almost no rain, and then when it does finally rain it's immediately followed by less than 50% humidity...often accompanied by wind. A real mushroom hater's paradise!

Just got back from a few days in the bay area. Went to discovery kingdom on Monday. That place is covered in red and black wood chips. It's well worth hunting inside the park. Allenii are finally starting to come.
These are not from the park. Mill valley area. I will give this cluster a few more days before I pick it.

Here is why it's good to cut the stems instead of pulling up the clump. This is from a cultivated patch. Look at all the pins that have yet to mature. No future for them now.
-------------------- Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I agree with Tahoe - cut stems = more pins next flushes. Take butts only for expansion projects and accidentally.
