Awww shucks guys...thanks!
Check out this shot of the whole patch for No. 3 above.

You have to look kinda close to see the pins. Notice how most of the center is without pins? I'm trying to get that to fill in by watering it. After my experience at the downtown cyan spot, I have a certain hypothesis about pinning. That, if you catch a patch as it's producing pins, and you water it daily or almost daily, it'll keep producing more and more pins. In other words, it seems like there's a point when a patch determines that it's produced enough pins...and then it stops and switches to growing the existing pins. Whereas, maybe, just maybe, by watering it at the right time and more or less constantly, you can cause the patch to greatly extend, and perhaps never cease, that initial stage of producing new pins.

From just now in the rain:
1)
Progress of a known patch of P. cyanescens that started fruiting in the last week...pics were posted a few days ago.
2)
P. allenii at a known patch also pictured days ago. Had to clip a few colossals.
Bonus)
A couple Felis silvestris catus friends I met while hunting during the last few days.

so torn now, between DavidR and JayZ I don't l know what to do with my day off today, was considering getting out there in the rain, so I guess I'll go out and look, but not look but still kinda look and explore a few places I've been meaning to check. I'd love to add a few new patches this season to last seasons. Good on ya DavidR fo scoring a nice p. allenii patch right out your front door, I hoping I'll be as lucky one of these seasons. Happy hunting out there.

Minutes ago:

A section of the infamous downtown cyan spot, and some harvested specimens next to a few allenii from my last post. Lol, even in the rain I had to turn on the irrigation for a couple minutes...as an entire strip of the patch sits under an overhang.
NCDaytripper - Yes get out there and check those spots and report back! Good luck!

I've got a little less than an ounce dry from a small new patch of allenii I found out here. (my camera broke last spring, no pics)
Still not seeing any activity about the patches I found last winter.
I have a clump of colonized woodchips about the size of a dinner plate sitting in my back yard. It's from the bits & pieces of substrate that I accidentally pulled up from a few of my patches over last winter.
3 weeks or so ago I noticed some primordia forming among that clump of woodchips, and over the past week or so there's been quite a few pins popping up. I thought the mycelium was dead, as it was sitting in my backyard all summer through many days of 100+ degree weather. I'd give it a little sprits of water here and there, but wasn't consistent with keeping it moist and it went a couple weeks with out receiving any moisture a few times through the summer. Was surprised to see fresh strands of mycelium stretching about it once summer started to wind down. I've been keeping it consistently moist over the past month or so now.
Now I need to not procrastinate and actually make some spawn with that clump of colonized chips this time around.

Hey thanks for the tip! I'm not sure what's going on with the substrate right there. I think maybe someone dumped a bunch of potting soil overtop of the chips...I say this because many clusters sprung out of what looks to be pure dirt. Or maybe below the surface is a mixture of soil and woodchips. (The whole landscaping rises to a foot high mound.) Anyway, I would like to replenish the woodchips if such a thing is practicable in severe drought. I don't remember it raining even once last spring. If you've got more to say about it, I'd love to hear.

That's interesting. I guess you didn't look since you thought it was dead, but I wonder if it had live mycelium in it during the year when you were watering it occasionally. That kind of project could be useful even just to help understand what goes on in patches throughout the year.

Damn, you're lucky. I wish I could have a good time eating these things. I'm scared to even try 'em again. The body load was awful for me, and the trip mimmicked extreme depression mentally. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was very theraputic. But I remember saying outloud during the trip, "I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy."

Wow, people! Nice finds! I love those almost burgundy colored caps, Ran-D. And, Cubespr, great chunky little cyans and allenii!
Chululu - I wouldn't recommend buying mushrooms from those bums at the park. Most of 'em have never even heard of cyans or allenii...they just have old stale cubies and they'll rip you off any way they can.

i dont like to do it often, tripping just isnt that enjoyable for me anymore, but i like to bioassay every years harvest. and since these were the first of the year, i felt i had a duty
