Questions on shotgun terrarium
    #22345848 - 10/07/15 02:41 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

A friend of mine recently set up a shotgun terrarium a few days ago. Before that his unpinned cakes were in a terrarium with two inches of perlite and no holes. The humidity in that other terrarium was a lot higher it seems. Now the cakes are in a shotgun terrarium following all the instructions. His questions are:
1. Will the increased FAE be more beneficial than the lack of moisture?
2. The cakes are on a 12/12 cycle and its been about a week since they were dunked and rolled and pinning has yet to occur, would the increase in FAE help this?
3. Also how often does one have to spray/fan a shotgun terrarium, if one has to at all?

Thanks in advance, this hobby can be quite confusing at times

First off i have a few questions.

Did you build it to the specs like the tek calls for? 1/4 inch holes 2 inches apart on all sides top and bottom?

4-5 inches of perlite in the chamber?  :takingnotes:

The light being on 12/12 will be fine, an increase in FAE will probably do much better than no holes in a chamber at all.  If you built the SGFC correctly then it WILL work as long as your cakes arent contaminated from being moved around between chambers so much.

You are required to spray a fine mist OVER your cakes but how often is up to you. Most people say 3 times a day. Morning, evening, and night. Thats what I do and have been successful. DO NOT spray your cakes directly and be sure the mist is in fact a mist not just shooting out droplets of water. This could bruise the cake and slow down pinning especially if the droplets arent getting evaporated off. You will be able to tell if they need misted. If you see a shine to them or tinnnnnyyyyyy drops of MIST sitting on the cakes then you dont need to spray them any more. If you notice any dry looking cakes which would look more blue than the rest I would recommend spraying more often but be careful cause blue bruising can be caused by several other things such as just touching the cake too much.

Remember a key aspect that is needed for pins is the evaporation of water from the substrate as well as the right FAE and humidity at the level of the substrate, in your case the cakes. I have learned through trial and error as well as being yelled at on here that the humidity of the chamber itself isnt whats most important however what is most important is the humidity directly at the level of the substrate. Always be sure to fan after you mist and fan enough to exchange some air inside the chamber but not enough to fan verm everywhere. I go by the idea that if the perlite moves or i see verm fly off a lot I am fanning way to hard. Fan enough to feel the air being pushed inside the chamber.

Best of luck my friend and good vibes are being sent your way!!:mushroom2:

Thank you for the very informative reply. My friend did in fact follow the tek(2 inch holes, 5 inch perlite, etc). My final questions is why fan after spraying? I spray after fanning under the impression that otherwise you'll just fan away what you just sprayed. Does it make a difference?
BTW the cakes are sprayed and fanned at least 4 times a day

In a nutshell yes fae is much more beneficial than humidity. Humidity is only important on the surface of the mycelium, and in order to keep the surface 99% humid mist them until they glisten with no pooling water.

Also in a sgfc there's so much fae that fanning after a mist is just redundant. The fae will evaporate what you misted very quickly. Fruiting is dependant on this evaporation. That's why people say only fan after misting, to help evaporate what you put on. Fanning before will literally do nothing but make it more dry before you mist lol

Air is much more important than the ambient RH inside the SGFC. the SGFC even with all the holes still does a good enough job at slowing down moisture loss from the cakes and the mushrooms(once they grow)

the only purpose of a FC is to slow down the loss of moisture so that your mushrooms don't crack. the RH in the few millimeters or less from your substrate surface(cakes in this case) is 99%. as water is always evaporating from the vermiculite(dunk and roll) or from the surface of your bulk substrate in a monotub for instance the RH forms a concentration gradient and it's always 99% at the surface, so long as the surface has moisture and isn't bone dry.

as long as you're home once a day for more than an hour you can maintain a SGFC.

super high humidity is a way to prevent moisture loss from mushrooms however super high humidity is almost always met with early contamination and shitty growth. a green house can get away with higher humidity because of the forced air. trying to modify a SGFC with pumps and humidifiers is futile though it's best to just make a green house, or make a totally passive design like a SGFC or monotub. don't bother with fancy stuff mushrooms needs are simple.
