The Sopranos

Is there anybody else out there like me who thinks that The Sopranos is the most realistic fictional production they've ever seen on screen? (And perhaps one of the best in general)? I mean, it doesn't look at all like it's being produced, it just looks real. I imagine that is extremely difficult for filmmakers to pull off, and every season was like that. Also, the acting is phenomenal. They don't seem like actors at all, especially Tony -- they're so gritty and perfect for their roles. I just can't understand how they consistently made it seem so real -- you're not aware of anything but the action within the scenes.
Anyone else see this too?

Yep. It's impressive just how super likeable the characters are considering some of the stuff they get up to. Also despite the heartbreaking themes there is a subtle element of humor present that stops it from being too dramatic and adds to the realism. I don't know the right word but there's something about how absurd some of the situations are, it just makes it feel more human. I couldn't help but laugh at the way random frustrations were repeatedly taken out on the bartender at the club... chistopher and paulie's interactions were always amusing... paulie's character in general was a highlight for me...
Your thoughts on the last episode? people told me to prepare for disappointment but I thought it ended perfectly.

To be honest, at first I didn't like the ending. I felt like they copped-out because they couldn't think of anything good enough. However, over the years as I have thought about and watched it more, I like it a lot. I think it really is perfect -- it's appropriate, they didn't screw anything up (like the last episode of Seinfeld, for example), and it's a happy ending, as far as we know. What a great series from start to finish.

Hmm, I figured that was no happy ending. Now maybe I've put too much thought into this but I see a lot of foreshadowing going on in the last season, this conversation in particular gives a clue:

Well, I've heard the arguments both ways, and I don't think he dies. Here's an excerpt from an interview of David Chase, who basically said that whether Tony is alive or dead is not the point:
Quote:
"As David Chase has said numerous times on the record, ‘Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point.’ To continue to search for this answer is fruitless. The final scene of The Sopranos raises a spiritual question that has no right or wrong answer."

That's interesting, now I'm not so sure if I like it What do you suppose the spiritual question is? Something to do with uncertainty, like Total Recall?

Not sure. It may have something to do with karma. Tony's done some bad shit, but his family is very together and loving. So we can see how, on the one hand, Tony might get whacked, but on the other, make it through and start to see things more clearly -- there was some foreshadowing for that, too. I dunno, just throwing some ideas out there.
