Is this a meadow mushroom?
    #22344419 - 10/07/15 09:12 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Pretty sure it is an Agaricus campestris (pinky) Right? It doesnt particularly smell of almonds IMO but I never thought any of the others I found did either. It was growing from soil in a cow pasture in NE Ohio. There are a lot of brown gilled Agaricus in the same fields.

Looks close enough. No A. campestris that I've picked has smelled of almonds anyway

Thanx. I figure the veil has worn off completely. I also figure the brown gilled versions might not be arvensis but instead just matured and declining meadows.

I will check it for red brown bruising and spore print it and see if the print is brown.

Nice photos!

Smell is highly subjective, especially with "smells like".

Looks like an edible variety. right?

The spore print will be chocolate brown. Their gills start out pink and then darken to chocolate brown as they age.
The aniseed thing isn't a myth. Species like A. arvensis definitely smell of aniseed. But this species doesn't.

I know you didnt mean any offense. I know what you mean about the smell. Will let you know how the spore print turns out. Thanx for the info. Can I eat the mature brown gilled ones as long as they aint rotten? Also bout my absence its been a rough year for fungi here :frown:

As long as they aren't full of maggots or rotting you can eat them when you like. Young is best though as with all mushrooms

Do you know how to detect the phenol smell of the poisonous Agaricus?

I find it easiest to detect after crushing the extreme base of the stipe.  Some fruits give off a strong smell, others more subtle.  Sometimes, it's hard to detect, but comes out in cooking.

If you're going to try this mushroom, pay attention to the smell while cooking and eat only  a small piece, then wait overnight before you eat the rest.

Update spore print turned out chocolate brown. No bruising observed really. I went and found some more. The first and second plate are probably the ones I will keep. Unless the browner gilled ones are said to be fine as well.
