Heat DOES matter

I used to think heat didn't make a huge, noticeable difference in the incubation stage. That was until, on my current batch, I checked my jars that were being kept in a box in a blanket next to a radiator. I noticed the jars close to the radiator that were actually warm to the touch were showing signs of colonization already, while the ones cold to the touch ain't done shit. Just found that interesting and am now marveling at my former ignorance.

86 degrees F, 100% humidity, minimal gas exchange, total darkness.
That should do it.

no need for 100% humidity during the colonisation phase.

There uncovered. The only thing im worried about is that the verm I used hade these like goldish colored tin looking peices. Does anyone else see that. And my cakes look white cause of the BRF...Is that normal

How come you leave the holes open after innoculation? doesn't that dry out your cake as well as make is easy for contams to get in? im a newb, so i really appericiate experienced knowledge. Ty

yes I disagree with fugulus' statement advocating minimal gas exchange during colonization. polyfill is WAY speadier than taped up holes. If your jars stall, many suggest removing the tape and inverting the jars to STIMULATE gas exchange for improved colonization.

you have a dry verm layer to keep contams out,any other added filtering on pf jars is not needed.

It's more than possible for the dry layer to fail to keep out contaminates. Fair enough, it's usually pretty good, but using polyfill or some other hydrophobic filter can really cut down on contams, epsecially if your incubating in a less than clean environment. -Odium

yeah thats fine,a pf jar even with the inoculation holes will maintain it's own high humidity environment inside the jar.

In regards to the gas exchange discussion here. I'm using rye grain for my substrate in 1 qt jars. I'm working on my temperature, I've gone from 82 a yesterday to 88 today so i cut back the thermostat. I'm aiming for 86 obviously. So in any case i have 1 qt jars filled with hydrated rye berries with an electrostatic filter across the mouth of the jar and a lid with about a 1/4 inch hole in the top. My jars are still covered with the foil i pressure cooked them in. I punctured straight through the foil to inoculate the jars and then placed a small piece of duct tape over the punctures left from the needle. Would someone with more experience tell me if I'm getting ample gas exchange here? thanks.
btw, for my temperature gauge I'm using a jar filled with water and an aquarium thermometer in the jar of water. Am i getting an accurate air temperature reading? I'm using 2 rubbermaids for my incubation chamber, one sitting in a reservoir on top of the other.
