Top layer question

So I put a thin top layer (about as thick as a typical casing layer) on a bunch of tubs, theyre PE so I was going to wait and put a casing layer on but went with just a top layer of coir because there was a ton of straw in the substrate and I didn't want it poking up everywhere.
Anyways this is a particularly vigorous culture and since spawing on saturday I can see thru the clear liner that the 5 tubs I spawned that day are fully colonized. Fully colonized except for the top layer, I see myc poking up thru in a bunch of places but I can see it will take a while for the whole top to colonize.
So my question is, normally I would wait for the whole top layer to colonize. But since the substrate colonized so fast, would it be appropriate to treat it like I put a casing on top and fruit them?
Thanks! Hope that makes sense.

If its PE I say wait it out until its decided not to do any more. PE does well with a consolidation period anyway amd if it stalls just patch then fruit. I have bad luck spawning to straight straw so I want to be damn surw myself its fully colonized.

The tub has only been colonizing since Saturday? There's no harm in leaving it to colonize for the full week, no matter how aggressive the culture is. Like Pasty said, PE will benefit from a consolidation period.

Ah yea man guess you're right, PE does take its sweet time to pin doesn't it
These tubs aren't straight straw though, its mixed evenly into coir, some are like 30-70 and some are 60-40 straw/coir. Straight straw I definitely put a layer on top when I spawn, usually coir/verm
These tubs I was just gunna mix up evenly and then case when they colonized but I changed my mind cause of all the straw and put a coir layer on when I spawned.
I have about six more tubs to do with the same spawn, since it seems to colonize so fast I think I might skip the top layer on these guys and just wait and put a casing. What do you think?

With PE, even if you do a top layer you will still want to case.

Ah thanks man. That was the big questtion rolling around in my head, cause theyre PE I knew I wanted to case but because of all the straw I figured I should put a layer of coir on.
Didn't know if it was OK to do both. I usually use a casing mix of peat/verm with lime and gypsum. Since I have the top layer of coir how deep would you s ugguest the casing to be?
Thanks man

Depends on how colonized the top layer gets. If only minimal colonization occurs then you could just patch. Otherwise a 1/4" would be fine.

When I use a top layer it always gets colonized, I thought it was supposed to?

It is but some cultures react different. Spawn ratios and field capacity can also affect it. Lots if times a top layer will only partially colonize. Other times a casing can be overrun.

I've never had a top layer NOT colonize but I have had casings get 100% consumed too. But I see your point, there are way too many variables in this hobby to say something "for sure".

It doesn't happen a lot but I have seen several instances where top layers don't get fully colonized. Has happened to me a couple times as well. Not a common occurrence but cannot be written off. Seems to happen mostly with coir. Probably due to fewer nutes.

Yea I've had that happen too, top layer willl kinda stall and then start pinning so I fruit them.
Im glad I asked, cause Im doing the last six tubs just all straw with a coir layer on top. Which normally I would just fruit as is. But since its PE I wanted to case so I almost didnt spawn them the way I wanted
Thx!

Agree. I recently did a tub of pe with top layer as stated. I induced too early due to time constraints and it caused me issues. Ive also been messing with this method the last year and i get better results letting the top layer colonize prior to inducing. Where on a normal casing i may induce prior to 100%.

Well I guess I don't have to worry these tubs are chomping right thru the top layer pretty fast.
Im praying these tubs don't go green on me haha.

Sounds to me that his top layer of coir on his mostly straw substrate is a casing layer. I would fruit that bitch.

Yea? These tubs are coir/straw. Its not a particularly thick layer of coir on top just enough to cover up the exposed grains and straw
The six tubs Im spawning today are all straw with coir/verm layer on top
This culture is pretty vigorous man I only spawned like last weekend

Well I'm actually experimenting with something similar. It's documented in a thread here. I basically spawned a tub and cased it and put poly in all at the same time. I've never let my pe consolidate extra on purpose. Spawn it. 5 days later case it and 3 or 4 more days fruit it. Fuck consolidation. I don't have time for that shit.

If it's gonna be dicking around for 3 weeks anyway, you might as well throw a real casing on.
I've also been experimenting with Coir Straw substrate, and I don't like any top layer straw poking out. I have been using a high spawn ratio coir/spawn frosting ontop.
--------------------
I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."
No, this does not look right...
