cheap grow light for seedlings
    #22342832 - 10/06/15 09:03 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I currently can't spend a whole lot of money on grow lights but here it is getting colder and closer to winter so I am trying to find a grow light that will take care of the seedlings through the winter. I would keep them outside but i heard since they can't handle like older cactus can. What are the light requirements of cactus seedlings from an artificial light?

Im not an expert but i have been using two 60cm 18watt 6500K fluorescent tubes. And was able to keep some lophs and trichs happy over winter.

Also started chills and Acacias under theses lights with high germ rates.

Sure if you search through some old treads you will find what you are looking for.

:whathesaid: (or is it "she"?)
I grow seedlings under fluorescent tubes. As long as they're rather low (don't expect much success with columnars...) and kept within reasonable distance of the tubes (6-8"), you'll be fine. I have grown Lophophora williamsii from seed to graft to degraft to flower under 6500K T5's @23W/sq.ft
Good luck and show us pics.

My winter seed-raising setup :

A pair of 20W 6000K fluoro tubes, from my local Chinese bazaar, seed trays on a reptile heating mat (from a pet store) connected through a lamp dimmer to control the temperature.  Only a few Euros for the lot.

I was going to suggest the exact same thing.
A shop light setup with a pair of 6500k flouro tubes are a great starter light setup. It's still what I use. I do veggies over winter to put out in spring and cacti seedlings all year round, as well as sally and whatever else I want to put under it...

My seedlings look terrible. I have some outdoors in bright shade, some indoors in a sw facing window, and some under the 23wcfls.

I hope they start to look better.

T8's are much cheaper, and nearly as good as T5's.

Get a basic shop light and a some tubes from a hardware store is the cheapest way.

You have to place an order online but walmart has 2 tube flouros for sale.

I bought 2 last winter and they've been working really well for all of my plants. I think they are 4ft and cost $18 for 1 fixture so super cheap and they work really well:grin:

Just order it and have it shipped to a walmart near you and pick it up when you get a chance.

If I may add a little something: "proper" T5's, the type you buy for aquaria or in design light shops, are indeed expensive. However, there are cheap chinese versions (no biggotry intended, please) that have the big advantage (from my point of view) of having electronic ballasts that run way cooler than the mechanical type that usually comes with T8's - and that is a major advantage in my country. If that is not the case in your country/climate, then please go for T8's.

I'm building a 180 watt LED system for about $30(I have a power supply already, but those cost about $30-50 depending on the quality).

Would using 23w 6500k CFLs work for seed raising and winter care?
Or does it have to be tubes?

He was responding to Oggy saying he was building an LED setup.
But yes, building a flourescent setup is possible. Not the tube, (I imagine), but you can get all the parts you need to set up the rest of the fixture and pop in the tube no problemo.

I think it depends on how many plants you are raising. I guess a CFL would support a very small amount of seeds, but if you get where you have a dozen different types of plants coming up and are trying to light any more than a couple sq feet, I'd strongly recommend a pair of tubes.

what's with all the cool lamp colours?
wouldn't plants prefer something a little closer to actual sun light?

Spectrum. The different colors affect growth and flowering. (violet, blue, green for growth.. and yellow orange red for flowering). But, as I say that. . it depends on the plant.  if you do indoor grows you can try to provide additional light in 1 or 2 colors. That might be good for seedlings and young plants, having blue-violet..and if wanting flowering, red-orange.

You could read more if you like. This web link and article has more information and a diagram or 2.
