Personally preferred substrate mix for bulk and why?
    #22342807 - 10/06/15 08:59 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hello everyone!

With so many choices for substrates out there, I'm just looking to narrow it down a bit with some experienced advice. I'd like to go bulk, I have a 1 half gallon healthy culture grown in rye berries (Stropharia Cubensis Cuban) and would like to bulk it!

I have considered buying pre-pasteurized substrate but would also like to know my options.

Thank you!

There will be too many. From horse poo to cow poo. Straw to coir to grass clippings. Verm is the one thing that is essentially constant. Many people use gypsum, many don't. There are tons of bulk recipes posted on this site, try the search engine.

Guys... To start, thank you for your... Attemps? I have seen the hundreds of mixes! Thus my question! "Personally preferred by experienced cultivator" I am not experience and feel I will make poor choices, so I have decided to kindly ask Shroomery for some help. This is why I even add my intentions in hopes someone might help a noob (who has read so much he's got a thousand things he is considering) narrow his search down a bit!

Get a brick of coconut coir (not fiber), get a small bag of vermiculite. Search "coir tek" or "cvg tek" or "bucket tek".

You are welcome

Dehydrated Horse Poo or Cow Poo, Coco Coir, Straw, Verm, supplement with Gypsum, hydrated Lime, and/or coffee grounds. Pick and choose. Mix and match. Post pics along the way

I like coir/verm/gypsum mix and straw,  in varying ratios from 25-50% straw to coir to 100% straw with coir layer

Cvg is imo the best for a starter (though I've never used it , so I guess you can always do different substrates).

Honestly don't even use verm. Hpoo, straw and gypsum beotches. Sometimes pure hpoo.

I prefer streufex horse bedding pellets made from grain straw. Unfortunately, they don't make these pellets anymore and I probably have the last 120 quarts of it left in the world so I mix it with whatever I can (mostly hpoo because it's free).

:whathesaid:  yea he's right man. Coir you can getaway with just mixing with cold water but anything else needs to be pasteurized proper, between 140-170 for an hour.
So you should learn the techniques to do that at home

I like coir because I don't have to worry about pasteurisation.  It's also a nice casing.  I do cvg in a bucket.

Thank you everyone!

You are all awesome!

I'm going to spend a few more days researching but I'm thinking Damion5050's Coir Tek, the only difference is this recipe doesn't call for gypsum and I'm thinking i'd like to use gypsum. i obviously trust this cultivator but really!?!? Coir doesn't need to be pasteurized?

I'm kind of new myself, but from everything I've been reading c/v/g tends to be a favorite because of contam resistance. I'm using hpoo/c/v/g for my current batch because, from what I understand, hpoo is the king. However, you have to pasteurize. I use a slow cooker, perfect temps on "keep warm" setting.

I just toss a handful of gypsum in everything.  Handful in my grains.  Handful in my CVG.

Coir is super contam resistant.  I bucket tek it and leave the extra in the bucket for casing material.  I've yet to find anything growing in there.
