Contaminated jar transferred to fruiting chamber
    #22339517 - 10/06/15 02:13 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Good day

I recently started growing and tried my best to look for and eliminate contaminated jars, however one jar had mold contamination in the center and only a small amount showing on the side, I mistook this for substrate and ended up putting it in the fruiting chamber, however after having a closer look I noticed this was mold and removed it very carefully.

I am just wondering now if all my other cakes are now ruined as well or will they be unaffected?

Thanks

If the myc is healthy, they will fight off any and all contaminations. If they were weak due to bacteria or the cakes being too wet, then they'll be dead. The thing to always remember is fruiting is always dirty. It's open air. When things contaminate it isn't from the fruiting conditions being unsterile. It was that something has been wrong with your prep work, syringe, inoculations, or Sterilization. Not fruiting.

Once fully colonized cakes rarely contaminate. You could put a very small amount of peroxide with water in a spray bottle and mist the chamber slightly.

Thanks for the responses guys, my other cakes in the chamber have very healthy mycelium and I have misted with some peroxide water.

Thanks

Wait what's the point of the peroxide? It's a box with holes everywhere. There's mold spores literally everywhere. In 1 inch in front of your face there's approximately 100,000 mold spores. This is what fruiting is exposed to. All the peroxide does is weakens the mycelium. Peroxide is ONLY beneficial when there's cobweb you're trying to fight.

Consider this. This is what open air is. This is what we bring into our fruiting rooms/chambers: http://pharmlabs.unc.edu/labs/parenterals/techniques.htm

Once in fruiting you don't have to worry about contaminants. Even contams next to each other. Though it's highly advised you don't. Things that contaminate early are from a problem during colonization. Most likely due to techniques or inoculant. Not your fruiting chamber or room.

Just extra little things I guess. Such a small amount shouldn't hurt the mycelium.

I can agree.. it most likely didn't cause too much harm. I just see no point in this situation lol. Fighting against contams in fruiting is just a losing battle. That's why you should focus on your prep and techniques over trying to keep everything spore free. No need to bleach bomb every time you get a contam. Honestly haven't even alcohol wiped or bleached anything fruiting related in over 6 months now

I'm as well still learning the every detail of the hobby haha.

Your other cakes are fine however.
