Yes, the main drawback to having categories for too rare or uncommon of a species/genus, is the lesser amount of entrants we would then see. Hopefully we can hash something out as inclusive as possible, within reason, without unbalancing entrants; as pointed out AV flower much sooner and would own a first to flower comp!. But of course if there looks to be enough support for something say an AV category, then we can go with it.
The greatest trich mass after a fixed period of time could be a fun one to try again too.

and about a fixed number of seeds. well, that is not grafting i guess (trichs on own roots i suppose)
about AV i don't see myself having those seeds on my hands for the competition. I may have some from my own exemplars this year, but not in time for the competition, also i don't feel I will buy some, since so expensive and such poor experience at sowing.

Maybe aim something for spring, giving people time to prepare stock, acquire seed and so on.
Perhaps we should rename the thread so people know what it is for. Any ideas for that, guys?

Yea this thread probably needs it's name changed to something like
Grafting competition 2015 questions, comments and Ideas.
May be best to sticky it for a month or so too
I like the idea of having it again and being a part of it. Are there any prizes like maybe the winner could receive a number of interesting seeds to raise?
Maybe someone could set up a PO-box and ask for donations in seed form or make it a rule to join in you have to send a small amount of seed to add to the prize.
After thinking about that one a lil while I doubt it would work and probably just won't fit but I'll leave it up there just in case one of you guys can work on that idea to make it possible.

Maybe one of the sponsors and advertisers might want to advertise and or sponsor this project. I am sure if they learn of the competition the (prize) might materialize from (said company) as a donation.. and a lil lip service to the company name for the prize. . Otherwise, yeah.. maybe someone could set up a post office box.. etc.
Its nice to see some Ideas coming about.

If we get this thing started I will put some mammilaria tetrancistra seeds I harvested this week for one of the prizes.
Presumably one of the harder to grow mammilaria species that is prone to rot. Luckily for me I have a wild plant growing in my yard to harvest seed from:)
As for the new thread title I like your idea Spaceman. If there are no objections or other suggestions I will change the name tomorrow.

Sounds good
Let's tentatively aim for a March start?
Anyone can contribute prizes, which will be divvied up between whatever categories we settle on.

Title changed.
March is probably good. Most of us will get better results using the spring and summer sun to fuel pereskiopsis growth.

At least most of us in the northern hemisphere.
(but that's only fair, the last competition started in September...)

This needs a bump
Tentatively aiming for a start in March! The prize pool is growing..
The categories will most likely be a repeat of what has gone before, with first and second places each winning a prize.
Species Specific:
- Quickest to Flower Lophophora
- Quickest to Flower Astrophytum
- Quickest to Flower Turbinicarpus
Overall:
- Best Freak
- Most Beautiful Scion
- Best Grafting
The overall categories will enable entrants to choose their species, so we can see a wider range. I don't want to run too many species specific beyond the most common many of us tend to grow and graft with, as entrants will be less, risking competition stagnation again...
First to flower categories will run until we have a 2nd winner. Best of categories to run for a fixed duration, then entrants put up for popular votes.
I'd like to get the rules and categories finalised by the solstice, setting a start date for the equinox, so we have 3 months to get prepared.
Please keep any suggestions coming!

Sooo... i guess we will be using only pereskypsis since they are the fastsest stock right?
My backup of peres at the moment, I left them without water for a bit... anyhow, i will get some nice cuttings repotted in late gen/feb , so i can have good stocks for the competition.

Lem, Makes a good point. I will have to get my Peres, inside and start conditioning them for spring competition. Mine are still out in the cold-greenhouse. LOL

Personally my pereskiopsis are not really ready for grafting until late May/Early June, with my main growing months July and August. By October they stall and go into a very slow growth period. But that's just me. Regardless, I'm sure I'll participate in some shape or form. Missed the last one. If you did early or mid-May as a compromise for those with later starting springs that would be cool.

Well my thinking for a march start, is the northern hemisphere is then hitting 12/12. The later we start it, the shorter the season for all. First to flower can still be beaten by a late entrant, as its total time from sowing to flowering that is counted, not the first to produce a flower after the start date. Entrance can be left open for a couple of months from the start date so those of us with later springs can still join in, if unable to get going sooner under lights.

A seed pod on my Astrophytum caput-medusae split open today and spilled out 20 big, black seeds. Now this plant is either self-fertile (who knows?)or the seeds are hybrid. Either way they will be my seeds for a grafting competition.

I am so down. I missed the last competition. Been away for awhile, I'm so happy to be back.
I've missed you guys
I will have something to throw down for the prize pool, what that may be is yet to be determined.

So to be clear which species are going to be allowed? Lophs, Astrophytum, Turbinicarpus right? Will Trichocereus species be allowed? Obviously not for flowering I would think it would take way to long for that lol.
also if I'm assuming correctly I can't sow the seeds or graft them to the stock until after the set date correct?
I really would like to participate in this so I'll probably be hunting for seeds to plant in March gonna mark it in my calendar just hope I can find some cheap....

For the Best Freak, Most Beautiful Scion and Best Grafting categories, the choice of stock and scion is up to the entrant.

Sowing can begin any time after the start date. Graft as soon as you feel confident
Fastest to flower will be the time from each individuals sowing to flowering, not the first flower to be produced after the start date, as not everyone will be able to begin on the very first day.
In the best of categories, a small advantage can be gained by sowing as soon as possible. As this will be a popular vote and not based any specific attribute to signify a winner, we just have to do what we can in the time alloted.
