You can pick up the entire bin to judge how hydrated your substrate is. If it feels light it probably needs water if it feels heavy the substrate is nice and hydrated.
I can't teach you what that weight feels like so you'll have to get a feel for that yourself.

Just wanting to chime in. This is my first attempt at Bodhisatta's monotub tek. I used his 650g of coco coir to 6 3/4 quarts of spawn. flipped the lid at 80% colonization and this is where it's at. I have 50% RH and I haven't misted once as I can see little speckles of moisture drops on the surface. This is day 7. I have the same light he uses right on top. The tub feels heavy so I believe it has plenty of moisture. I pretty much use his set it forget it method and don't turn the lid to a 90. Even when I am home. I am wondering when I should start to see knotting and or pinning. Maybe every strain is different. This particular strain is Cambodian. What do you all think about what you see and if there are any recommendations as far as misting etc....

Thanks for the comment. So here is where it's at now day 13 into to the spawn run. How does it look to you all? I know that BOD says that not getting side pins is almost like an art. Look at these side pins beneath the surface WTF... What can one do about that? What I would do to have them on the surface. Is there a way to harvest them or are they just gonners. I watched Bods mixing video and did it exactly the same. My light is dead center on the top. Is this a FAE thing? I haven't been turning the lid to a 90 and I have only misted a few times. It seems the pins are really taking their time growing on the surface. RH 50% in the room temps are 66 to 68 F. Any advice and comments are much appreciated!

Day one of the spawn run

Using a 34L tub, half a brick of coir, half the water and 4 qtrs of oats.
Got the room temp monitored and the lights on 12hr/off 12hr.
My question is I see alot of people talk about room temp which I think I've got sorted, but what sort of temps would you see in the tub? I've seen plenty of comments in the past about 28c being the sort of temp where you start to get too hot but what about the tempature of the cake/substrate itself? My laser thermometer reads 26c - is this something I should be concerned about?
Thanks Bod.

Pack lightly but leave it airy. Do not push down with your weight. Fluffy is good to packed and it will become anaerobic

They will grow upwards and you can harvest them as the sub shrinks. Even using trash bag liners you get some side pins just not as many.
Try a casing or crumpled wax paper close to the surface to provide a better microclimate on the surface. Your side pinning is likely due to RH issues at your subs surface level.

First of all I can't say enough about this TEK. Fing ROCKS! Some of you might find this sac-religious but regarding the side pins I notched out that piece and put it on top. That big cluster you see (pic far right) is them flattened pins from the photo a few post up all reaching for the sky. The first pic I harvested this morning 348g the second pic I harvested that batch 5 hours later at 321g then the far right I will harvest in the morning. I expect to easily exceed 1200 g total from the first flush. I know all about the liner methods etc.. I am not sure what Master Bods technique is from preventing side pins using this tek but I sure wish I knew. Regardless, I am very pleased with the results. This Cambodian Strain is one hell of a producer. Not sure what the study will be like but if anyone has ever tried this strain and cares to chime in that would be great!
