Alright ya'll, this is my first time using this method, so I want to make sure to do it right. I have a lot of problems with overlay in previous grows with trays, which ruins my ability to mist. With this tek, what is the optimal way of keeping the lid positioned, plus lighting methods and misting, until it reaches a point I need to start fruiting (and when exactly is that? how do I tell?) Also, is it OK to add a little gypsum? My grows have always liked it with manure but I don't want to ruin this new style of grow. I'm absolutely new to tubs and I only have 5-ish quarts of rye grain to work with (also different from this tek) colonized (and have been sitting a long while.)
I've been putting a lot of hard work into these jars and don't want to flop the process, can anyone please give some detailed info for these questions? I tried my coco-peat (seems %100 coco but ugh at all that) in a tester tray and all it did was colonize upward and die, turning into bruised deathy mycelium, if it was even that and not bacteria. Please help!

You're over thinking it. Cubensis and overlay? Optimal depends on your environment. Gypsum is fine why wouldn't it be

Yeah, overlay :/. I'm like the overlay king. I have no clue if it's mycelium or bacteria each time, because it certainly isn't any type of mold that I've seen, but I'll have shine-bright white little tiny "stems" that always grow through my casing, forming tiny white puff balls on top, and as soon as they meet a drop of mist, they rubberize, mattify the casing in veiny formations, and though I'm good at whipping it all into shape eventually, it creates time problems.
This time though, I tested out this "coco-peat" I have (which from what I've read is indeed processed a little differently and *may* be less nutritious), without gypsum or anything, and did my usual RR Rye and Shotgun Tek in a tray. Always eventually worked for me before with manure. This time, just the veiny crap, not one pin. I'm being a little restless too because I do need to expect pins before at least 7 days in conditions, the whole wait 20 days after trying to fruit type of thing is no longer going to be my style.
So I just put a verm layer over it to see what in the heck that might do. I'm just not liking this coco-peat stuff. Maybe mine really needs some extra nutrition through gypsum, but I've already made a new batch of coco. What'd be a good amount to add to a brick so that the PH levels stay safe? My coco specifically says it's pre-washed with low PH.

So here it is fruited almost ready to harvest. Just seems like they're too small.
Do you think upping the spawn would help with that?
I used 1 quart grain spawned to 2 quart wormcasting coir verm gypsum mixture.
Came from MS.

Did you use a casing cause that doesn't look fully colonized. Also people usually shoot for a 3-4 inch substrate so you might have better luck using a smaller tub or upping your spawn and sub.

One of my biggest questions too - during colonization in the tub, do I keep the lid on normal side up with the latches off, or upside down, or what? Right now I have it normal side up and just slightly ajar, not really sure what's the best here for the Co2 levels and all.

Just read the first post
Quote:
I generally will flip the lid over as the substrate nears full colonization or anywhere from 50-90% colonization. It's not rocket science and you'll need to develop skill and experience so try shit and learn. This means I am putting the tub into "fruiting conditions" a little bit before full colonization

That's all that he says about it, I asked a few weeks ago as well. I've just left it on with one latch clamped down, bout to flip it over tomorrow. Day 6 and it looks 100% on the surface

No casing layer.
I waited until there was about 9 or 10 blobs on the surface then I flipped the lid and started misting when the surface felt dry.
Also guess it's important to mention the sub had some green on the surface. I cut out the spot, filled it with salt and sprayed the whole tub with 1:100th bleach water.

After dunking the monotub, in how many days should we see pins or mycelium growing back?

moved the bins, taped black garbage bags under to keep light from hitting the bottom.

have very few side pins, mainly on one tub that the side let go of the sub and left a tiny gap for FAE to get into.
had some troubles learning how to properly keep moisture and FAE balanced. misted and fanned at least 5 times a day on one tub, it pinned less. the tub i left alone a little more and kept a watchful eye on, figured out how to keep the lid in the right position.. it turned out a bit better. pins and stuff coming in.
does this look like a little or medium> is this pretty decent for a first go? wondering how much weight i'm going to end up with at this density of pins.

more info in my grow log.
