Do bigger monotubs act differently. I'm using 105q sterilites because that's what I had on hand at the time. 1:1 spawn ratio. No casing. Should I start misting if I flip the lid? It's been years since I did a monotub. Haven't grown in close to 3 years aside from occasional cakes.

In between reading other teks I was wondering, why not crack one edge of the lid open, untill i found this. Male specimens tend to slam a hole in everithing what has a bottom lool So this is the solution not to ruin a tub. Thanks again B0D

Is it OK to use rye grain spawn mixed with the coir for this tek?

try to give me a reason you couldn't.
you can use any spawn or any bulk in combination with each other. provided the spawn is clean and the substrate is prepared in a way that is proper for it's type
Rye, oats, wbs, wheat, rye grass seed, whole brown rice, millet, milo, sorghum, corn. and so on are all used as spawn.
coir, manure form equine or bovine, straw, coffee, worm casings, etc.... are all substrate
everything that's not coir has to be pasteurized.
if you use coir, coir verm, coir verm gypsum, or coir gyspum then it can be sterilized (my suggestion) or pasteurized, or simply just hydrated with tap water coir does better cooked well so sterilization serves to simply darken the coir which makes performance better. it still is very hard to contaminate and with clean spawn you get multiple flushes no problem.
if you use anything that's not coir like manure, straw, worm casings, coffee. etc... then it must be properly pasteurized. likewise if you add any of those to coir then the whole mix needs to be pasteurized.

So I want to ask those that have tried this tek (and Bod too!):
Starting out (and only doing a Shotgun Chamber so far), I've had not one issue with innoculating. I seem to have a hand at creating beautiful jars of colonized grain. When it comes to having tried manure and casing, the worst problem I get is a little yellow ooze during incubation (~10 days). Nothing devasting, something that a napkin quickly absorbs.
Then when trying to fruit, it'll take another two weeks to see any pins, and by then, I can tell my trays are quite bacterial, however with no happenings of mold yet. And while I haven't yet had a failed tray, the yeilds produce few yet beautiful mushrooms. Only had, at best, 10g of dried mushrooms with my first attempt in a Shotgun Chamber.
If I tend to have issues with gettting the mycelium to pin as quickly and numerous as possible, is this tek much easier in that regard? I'd suspect that long-stalled mycelium in a tek with coir and no casing would get contams and mold quick without mushrooms there to override everything else.
Simply getting ready to go the whole hog with this tek from the ground up, and hoping that it suits my weaknesses in technique a little better than others!

Allcaps start using agar. You'll be happy you did. The bacteria is your biggest problem. If your spawn is clean then it'll show during the flush.

the yellow mystery substance sounds like mycelium metabolites (commonly called myc piss), I seem to get quite a lot of it pooled on the sides of the substrate. A little bit is normal, it's a byproduct of the substrate colonization and since we're spawning in open air, there's bacteria around

Metabolites are from bacterial contamination. It's not really myc piss. It's the bacteria fighting the mycelium. If you have this stuff in your jars there not clean. Use agar to make sure there's no bacteria.

All the current methods are great when using clean healthy inoculum and spawn I don't think you get an upper hand by using a different method so much as you do by knowing Clean spawn and training your substrate eyes

It's been a week since I flipped my lids. During the day I keep the lid at 90 degree angle. I mist like 6 times a day whenever they no longer have little droplets on them. A few spots pool up but evaporate just like the droplets. My substrate is almost level except for the few places it's a little higher lower. My bins smell of fresh mushrooms very strongly. But whenever I mist it seems I'm bruising the surface. It turns bluish green and stays that way until it's almost time to mist again then goes back snow white. I do have hard water but no water softener. There's alot of iron in my water. Will this constant bruising prevent my bins f.rom pinning? I've never had this bluing happen to my other bins since I moved in and started using this well water. The substrate was pasteurized with the same water. Full colonization took about 8-9 days. Also only one bin bruises. Both are i think AA+ the print I used wasn't labeled. I started on agar and inoculated wbs with wedges so it's still a multispore.

No it should be fine. If you're ok with misting that often you can leave the lid off like you do. Everyone's house is a bit different too. I like to do a little more set and forget until the pins come in if that make sense

What's the longest it's taken you to see pins? I was hoping to harvest for 4/20 but that's a long shot now.

Hi Bodhi, thank you very much for this TEK.
Have you found that it works as well with Rye?
Kindest regards Johnny
