What do you guys think? Input would be appreciated.
Some info,
- Strain - Puerto Rican
- Colonizing - 6 days
- 5q to 1 brick coir
- Lid flipped with 12/12 light
- Smells faintly vinegar-ish but it might just be the coir.
Thanks!

It looks kinda sketchy, it might go green. The vinegar smell is a bad sign. It looks like some of my tubs from when I first started bulk that would tam before the first flush. Mine was a result of going spores to grain. Did you go spores to grain or did you use agar?

It was done G2G. Small jar colonized fast with just a mushroomy smell. Transferred grains into quart jars, and they colonized fairly fast with no vinegar smell.
I'll keep monitoring it.
I've heard and seen that Puerto Rican strain has a more tomentose mycelium rather than Rhizo, and they can be a pain in the arse to pin sometimes.

Just mixed jars with sub into my tub. leaving tub in dark place for 10 or so days till colonized.
Do I leave the lid locked on during colonization or flip it from the get go after mixing with sub?

Check out the first post in this thread. Also don't leave in the dark. Probably also says that in first post

From Bod's tek: I now make no distinction between colonization conditions and fruiting conditions. I just chose to call it Growing Conditions My tubs do not dry out being in "fruiting conditions" during "colonization" My yields have stayed the same. My time to full colonization has decreased as has the time to pinning and harvest. I have always had exposed top grains, doing "fruiting conditions" immediately has not caused an issue even with exposed grains.
That means lids flipped, and 12/12 light cycle, no need to leave it in the dark.
Edit: Beaten to it by Bod himself

ok will leave lid flipped during colonization for growing conditions.
ive got a shop light ina room with west & north windows. i usually have the light on for other plants for 12 hours . should i toss it with those?
extra light cudnt hurt right? wud not be overkill?

Extra light won't hurt. Just be sure it's not direct sunlight.

Looking great still but I'm getting lots of side pins, and even some on bottom. After I mixed spawn and substrate I tucked against the sides but after couple weeks it's shrunken away and it's got that perfect environment between side of sub and tub. What did I do wrong? Does it matter?

Same for me. I've heard of people putting in new substrate along the sides to fill it in, but I'm not sure if that's what we ought to do. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will answer you.

Side pins are a result of better conditions between the sub and the walls than on the surface... Try lightly packing the edges and corners at spawn then leveling it out again... Also, dial field capacity back a little... Excess moisture will contribute to early shrinkage, which further contributes to the microclimate at the sides... Allow surface moisture to build on its own a day or two AFTER full colonization, and then evaporate nearly completely before misting... Many times, I'll go to first flush harvest not misting, maybe once... Really takes much less moisture than you'd think, and misting can cause improper surface conditions just as bad/even worse than not misting... The sub in the center of my signature was never misted from spawn: no gaps on top, and not a single sidepin ... coir was so dry at spawn that no drops fell when squeezed, but still ended up pouring excess moisture from the corners a week after full colonization: when metabolism kicks into gear and condensation levels pick up considerably

How important is using an artificial/additional light source beyond ambient sun light?
(thanks for your extensive and well-explained teks!)

Depends on a few factors including, but likely not limited to:
Intensity of ambient light & Varietal genetics
I've seen some that do great sitting in the kitchen on the shelf, not particularly close to a light or even a window, and other varieties who don't seem to get enough light with 100w replacement LED fixtures directly on top of the tub... give it a shot, if it shows early signs of insufficient light (growing in weird directions, or stretching ridiculously) throw on a cheap dome fixture with any old bulb in it: 6500k is ideal, but not necessary

I know you mentioned that someone has to have an idea of surface conditions to do this. Is it more practical to do a traditional modified monotub for someones first grow?

Well no... You'll still need to gain a handle on surface conditions?

Better to have experience with the type of tub you intend to use I suppose...

Yeah, guess I'll start with a few shoeboxes and see what I like and go from there.

I started with monos from day one. I just began my second grow a couple days ago, have had much success.

a shoebox grow is not a monotub grow... Though it will give you an idea of optimal conditions, and practices for a shoebox, it'll do nothing for teaching you to dial in a monotub, and you'll have to learn the tub anyways... Either way, you'll likely end up with at least one, "less than optimal results" tub
It's just the way it is
Strange to say yeah, then say the exact opposite of my implications, or to ask a question, having already decided in your mind lol
