I guess that duct tape around the tub to block light out really works eh?

Hey Bodhi this is awesome great content I have been an enthusiast for a few years now and wish I had seen this earlier have you ever read "Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less" I feel like you read it and then came up with this tek
Quick questions since I stress until I can fully wrap my head around something,
Do you run your lights continuously through the colonization and fruiting or do you set it on a timer for 12/12?
If I stack containers do you recommend leaving the lighting on top and rotating or having the light to the side? I believe if memory serves me right that you use heat from the lamp to help move air through the containers so mounting it on the side would not allow for that to happen right?
thanks!

Im sure there's a dozen or more ways to make it work. These tubs do stack but they don't stack as nicely as other tubs do.
If you stack them I rotate them 90° to each other so the stack looks like an X from the top view. You can use a light from the side. You'll have to play around to see what it takes in your situation to get surface conditions where they need to be. In the very dry months I often leave the lids mostly on all day regardless.
I do 12/12 lighting. Sometimes it's 24 on sometimes 24 off sometimes it's 18/6 but try to do 12/12 or get a timer
Right now I have more tubs than I do lights so I'm lighting some of them from the side and rotating the tubs every other day or so

The lids I got were broken

So the fucking corner dried out too quickly. I tried turning the lid every day but that only made the other corner fucked up. So I'm going to "fix" these lids for next time with some tape or silicone

Wow, so cracked Lids did that? You just have it dialed in pretty well.

ESS again with the pseudocasing top layer of coir that covers the exposed grains,
I'll be going back to just exposed grains and no top layer with cubes

I have yet to ever successfully had a tub without side pins. I've tried every suggestion. Using black liners. Flimsy liners. No liners. Never seems to fail that I get side pins. Idk

need to dial in your tubs better.
I've found even too little fae can cause a lot of side pins as well as too much.
You want the perfect micro climate on the surface of the sub.
There's a good tek around(forgot who's) about dialing in and surface moisture.
You want small beads of water on the surface and still supply as much fae as possible.
Slightly less fae for colonization and more once your pinset is maturing.
It can be a very fine line but if you play with it enough you can get it close to perfect for your environment.

i keep my substrates hydrated enough that it wont pull away from the containers walls. this can be tricky to get right as you can easily over saturate and get short shits. using unmodified tubs kinda makes dialing in obsolete since its more keeping up than honing in.
later flushes always have some side pinning but its no biggie.

talking first flush though even unmodified still needs dialing in.
Depending on you environment (RH, air movement, etc) you may need to use slightly more airflow on the tub(twisting lid, leaving open longer) for an area with less air movement or use more misting to accommodate for a very dry climate.
I always want max fae especially while fruits are forming so you'll need to dial any tub in any environment to get maximum potential.

Do you normally keep your lightbulb resting on the top of the lid as pictured in the tek?

The light on the top is a 26W 6500K spiral florescent and provides a minimal amount of heat which aids in convection. Sometimes I use one light like this per tub, you can use tube fluorescent lights for multiple tubs. There's far more than one correct way to arrive at great results. I have more tubs than lights I find that using 1000-1500 lumens per tub in lighting works well. With the bulbs being 1-2 feet away.
So no unless I just have one or two tubs going

@bodhisatta have you experimented with unmodified tubs without the use of lights? I usually have several tubs going at once and dont have enough lights to work with them all.

When do you flip the lid? At full colonization? Just before? When you spawn? I have 2 monotubs one at 90% the other 85% made on 4/3. I'm getting anxious.
