Hey I'm just wondering when doing this what is the most common part of the process that fucks up like getting contaminated or something is it during inoculation in the jars or is it very common to get contaminated after you mix everything in the tub?

Hi,
I've used this for my first effort at a bulk substrate. First flush was great and I'm very happy with it. Prepping for a second flush I noticed something for the first time.
My tub is in a wire rack next to a window. It gets plenty of natural light. I had some side pins, but not too bad. Today I went to flush and prepare for the second flush and it looks like I had as many schrooms on the bottom as I had on the top. The tub was not lined. Curious to know if I should harvest these? Are they ok?

Hey guys I really appreciate all the help so far especially you bod +1 for your karma points anyway I'm wondering at the end when everything is harvested does mushroom quality vary like weed quality from shit to great or will one variety of mushrooms always be pretty much the same potency no matter how its grown? Also is it normal for jars ready for inoculation to have moisture on the inside of the jar or is that too much moisture do the oats need to be drier? Also of I drop below 15 psi while sterilizing do I have to throw it out and completely restart it or can I just restart the 2hr timer for 15 psi and once sterilized what is the longest the jars should be left before inoculation?

This is my first go with bulk tubs and I've used this method but with WBS spawn. I've tried two smaller tubs and one bigger one and they have all had tons of side pins and bottom pins, more than the top. What am I doing wrong?

Post pictures of your progress otherwise all i can say is your moisture content and surface conditions need work.

Sorry its hard for me to post pictures. I have a nice layer of mycelium on top but it looks dry. The sides have a lot of water beading so I'm assuming it has a better microclimate there.
Side note I've been a long time lurker and your writes ups are amazing Bod, this has been a life changing hobby for me and you have been my favorite resource for information.

Thanks for this tek, Bod!
This is my second attempt at a grow. My first one got mold in the tub due to bad spawn. I think this one has good spawn and is boing well but I'd love some feedback. There are beads of moisture on the surface at night but none during the day. Am I right to think that I should leave it alone and let it do this without me trying to keep the surface beaded at all times?
This is day 11:

The lid was flipped immediately. 7 qts of oat and WBS spawn. I haven't misted at all. I also have only opened it a few times for a minute or so to take a picture.

It looks a tiny bit dry. I'm sure it has enough water for a good first flush so I would personally just do like 2 or 3 squeezes on your mister to promote pinning on your upcoming flush and then leave it alone until first flush or until the surface becomes noticeable dry again.
It's weird how you say the conditions change from day to night. You may already have decent surface conditions (i.e. water drops across the surface) though so the best way to tell if it needs a misting or not is to shine a light across the surface (flashlights work well) and take a peek

That's what I was thinking: a LITTLE bit of misting. Thank you for the flashlight tip. I haven't heard that before. I'll give it a try and only then give a little mist if there's no beads.

There was no beads so I gave it a very light mist and now there's tiny beads everywhere with no pooling. Back to leaving it alone for now. Thank you both!

Bc you're misting every other day! Never mist on a schedule, only when it needs it ... remember that your misting to maintain surface moisture, not to rehydrate the substrate... a properly dialed in tub (field capacity coir and gapping around the lid) will likely not need misted but once before first flush harvest... my guess is that evaporation isn't being allowed in the center, which is one of (if not THE) leading pinning triggers (along with full colonization (for cubes))... let it nearly dry before misting again... just leave it alone man! Lol

Sounds like you're hovering, over-saturating, and creating ideal conditions for contaminants to take foothold... just chill... clean spawn, field capacity coir, and some "alone time" is all they need lol... are you using agar or syringe straight to grain?
