I'm assuming you can go with this tek just using a shoebox as well?
Lid flipped immediately til harvest?

Sure can, but you don't need to flip the lid on a standard shoebox.
Bod has a shoebox fruiting tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=25274461&page=0&vc=1#25274461

I just made a bunch of coir per your tek. Only difference is I used two five gallon buckets one inside another to help with insulation. Going to make a version of this unmodified tub and post pics tomorrow. Using a bunch of cakes as spawn. Just waiting on the coir to cool over night.

Hi, Bod. I know this will sound like a bit of a dumb question, but you would inoculate the spawn and allow for the mycellium to grow on it before shaking it and adding to the coir? Also, when you inoculate the jars, you just plug the hole in them with cotton/ cover with breathable tape? Thanks for the help! -Xian

Hey Bod - I know you mention the importance of experience in gauging how much to mist but I honestly can't see any difference in the appearance of the substrate that would indicate whether it is too dry or saturated. Coir seems to be dark either way until it gets to the point of being bone dry. Any tips that I missed? I've tried searching your Tek and have not found this info. I followed the advice for dialing in the correct field capacity to start. Below is my tub at 2 days. Thanks for any help!

Patience, 2 days is no time... I typically don't see surface moisture until a day or two after full colonization... the mycelium acts semi-impermeable and hold beads of moisture on the surface of the substrate, prior to full colonization, the coir will simply resorb the excess moisture... If you're confident it was proper FC (looks fine) wait until after full colonization and the development of surface moisture before misting... allow evaporation to occur between mistings to stimulate pinning and avoid over-saturating the substrate... many times, I can get away with not misting until after first flush harvest, but usually only mist once; usually just after the development of pinset...
For now, LEAVE IT ALONE! Lol

Thanks! I have the RT at 24C. I see mycelium forming on the surface now (day 4) so I'm encouraged!

Great tek. Used this my first grow. I think these tubs are easier than making brf cakes. Less work and preparation. Honestly if a little extra money isnβt a concern and you want shit relatively quick and easily grain bags save so much time and hassle especially without worrying so much about contams.

I hypothesize that dialing in unbodeds has more to do with getting the room's RH up than it has to do with how much gaps you have on your lid.
When you need to use a lot of heat to get your room to good temps, you need to add to the RH or it will suck the tubs dry with the slightest crack.
Simultaneous fuzzy feet and dry sub surface.
It would be nice to have a big enough room to PC in without going over ambient temp.

A temporary spike in temp shouldn't be too detrimental, they're tropical afterall... would serve to boost rh though... interesting perspective from a seemingly dry environment

Its winter my RH is like 10-20 indoors. I use a space heater. I could care less about my room RH. Inside the tub is what matters and its above 50% your good to go
Come to think of it most of my nicest looking grows have been winter time.

Can you give us an idea of grow conditions? Rh? Room temp? When didbyou flip the lid for growing conditions? What brand of coir do you use?
Im having issues with very small fruits. I think my tub is drying out too fast especially with flipping lid on day one.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. All credit goes to the contributors here in Mush Cult. I had the advantage of Bod and everyone else's tek's and years of work to draw from.

Growing conditions: nothing special, in climate controlled home. I'm in the desert so the A/C ran some during this grow, set to 76f during the day and 71 at night. Light on 12/12. Don't know about Rh, didn't check. Lid flipped at spawn as per tek.
I'm not sure about the small fruits.

It seems to me it would be much easier to keep good FAE with the sub surface conditions lasting much longer between mistings with a higher ambient RH in the room.
Do you not notice your surface beads last much longer when your ambient RH is higher? How often do you have to mist with super low ambient RH?
I think you said that you even like to leave your lids completely off while you are at home, so maybe you don't mind misting frequently.
If you are able and willing to mist enough, you can grow in completely open air with no enclosure at all.
How do you set your tubs up when you have to leave the house for 10-20 hours?
