r
harvested first flush today.
1033g = 36oz wet.
this was 4 quarts spawn in a 29qt tub, using about half of a 650g coir brick plus 2 quarts verm.
that works out to a yield of 9oz wet per quart of spawn, or about 258g wet yield per quart.
beginner's luck. i'm very pleased with the result. will report dry weight once they're done drying.
thank you to all the experienced members who have shared your knowledge.
edit: dry weight 94g (3.3oz), which works out to a wet water percentage of 91%.
Very good info -
I have been reading some how-to posts for beginners
I have already purchased a few grain bags. Can I apply the same principles you have outlined and just follow the TEK?
Also - for a beginner looking for a very very simple TEK - which one would you recommend?

Impressive!

Thanks! Hopefully next time I will not be on a weekend vacation and be home to pick before the spores drop.
Why do you want to pick before they drop?

So before they drop they taste that much better? I have never hated the taste but I don think I have eaten the spores either

I have never noticed difference 8n taste between the caps full of spores and the stems
Does it really matter if the spore load is on the inside or the outside of the cap? You're still ingesting it..
If (IF) spores taste that bad then only way to avoid it is to harvest only young fruits who haven't started to produce spores yet.

Psicomvb said: More than likely not.. It showed up too early to get a solid flush. It will have a hard time pinning / fruiting because it's too busy fighting the contam (which always wins, unfortunately)
Are contams usually in the grain or jars from the beginning?
If you have a clean spawn and then move it to the substrate ... is the risk of contam likely low?
What actions can I take to ensure I do not get contams when I move my grain to monotub

Caps McGee said: We generate spawn in sterile conditions so that we have a healthy living culture present that has a chance to colonize the substrate before contaminant spores have a chance to germinate and grow to be an issue... spawning in open air subjects the substrate (whether coir only or a mix) to contaminants... always pasteurize mixes, and coir can be partially or fully sterilized using a bucket tek... coir will not contaminate, improperly pasteurized poo mixes will, but will typically get a flush... if it's contaminated prior to pins, it was in your spawn
Caps what do you think about these two pics? Is that contam or the good stuff

How did you inoculate? (MSS >grain or?) Any yellow or amber/brown fluids (like sap)
This bag has actually grown faster than the others (I am not sure how to guage the anaerobic-ness of this)
I am on day 7
here is my set up

I used a sterile needle in an air box that was sanitized with 70% and lysol. The needle was also hit with the blue flame torch for added measure. Gloves used. Ports cleaned.
Here are some additional pics

UPDATE
Youre right Caps
I pulled the duct tape label off and there was a black or dark green spot in the core of that large white mass ... so obviously something is off with this one
So I am chalking this one up to trial and error.
How - just for informations sake - do I tell whats real and whats contam moving forward?
The other bags seems to have white whispy cotton candy like growth and I am assuming thats the good stuff
appreciate any and all feedback

its strange tho because the edges of the large white mass do look like cotton candy but the core looks different
