Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction?
    #22336841 - 10/05/15 12:59 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

So there's this peculiar thing that happens to me when I run sometimes and today it was pretty bad, I'll do my best to be as detailed as possible but I believe I suffered from exercise-induced bronchoconstriction/asthma

So I put on my running gear and didn't really warm up at all which was a mistake, but I ran at a very high intensity for ~6 minutes, took a 2 minute water break then ran at a slightly lower intensity for a similar amount of time

It was then that I began to feel a strange tightness in my chest, breathing became difficult and somewhat painful and I could sense a somewhat metallic flavor in my mouth/esophagus, this tightness of the chest persisted as I walked home and became worse when I tried to run for even a minute or so

When I got home and sat down the tightness/pain began to go away within a half hour, and I started coughing like hell trying to bring up some mucus or something that is evidently stuck deep in my lungs, I can't manage to bring up much of it but what I do bring up is mostly clear and frothy but with some green mucus and small pieces of dark stuff mixed in

So I wheezed and coughed for a good 15 minutes trying to bring the crap up, didn't have much success so I gave it a rest and now my lungs are feeling back to normal for the most part

Can anyone here make an educated guess on what exactly happened to me to cause these symptoms? I know I should see a doctor but that isn't an option at the moment so I have to diagnose myself as best I can, based on my symptoms I'm lead to believe I gave myself exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, which is a condition caused when the airways in the respiratory system become constricted, inhibiting airflow and causing tightness and pain in the chest

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone and are there any steps I can take to minimize it? It should be noted that I smoked cigarettes and did not exercise for a very long time, I haven't been a regular smoker for almost a year now and I'm trying to develop constant exercise habits so a solution to this issue would be highly appreciated if anyone has experience with this sort of thing

It's weird because the other day I ran twice as hard and for twice as long on my treadmill and didn't have anywhere near as much chest tightness or pain during or afterwards, but I ran outdoors today and it was kinda chilly which I've read can be a cause of EIB

Thank you for taking the time to read this

I have heard it happen to others, including my myself. You should go to the doc and get an inhaler, as it greatly helps in circumstances like this. And for gosh sake, don't try to "push" yourself when these symptoms occur whilst exercising.

Sounds like exercise induced asthma if you ask me.  I run/cycle almost daily unless I am not feeling well, anyway I suffer from the same thing because I smoked cigs for 12 years and fried my lungs.  Make sure to warm up before doing any high intensity exercise.

I suggest walking for 5 mins at a decent pace, then a slow jog for 5-10 mins, then start to run, this will give your circulatory system, muscle fibers, joints, etc a chance to warm up.  Also if you like stretching, read this first before doing so.

http://www.runnersworld.com/start-running/should-i-stretch-before-or-after-my-runs

Also don't compare yourself to others you see out there, just get out there and run, don't worry about trying to look like an olympic sprinter or whatever, people can get caught up trying to look like someone who is on a nike commercial and then they compare themselves to those people and this usually causes them to lose focus on their goals, which affects their running in negative ways.

Most important part is make sure you're having fun.

I hope you feel better, your body will slowly get stronger over time, just keep at it man.

Here's an article on exercise induced asthma.

Edit:  Sorry I just read your whole post before making my reply, yes switching from a treadmill to running outside is going to be rather brutal on your lungs, just make sure to properly warm up and you will be fine.

I find when I start slow, by the time I hit 1.5 miles my body is wanting to push harder, and then pushing harder is easy to do.  This is because I gave myself proper time to warm up, I run all through the New England winter as well, as long as the ice is not to thick on the side of the road I still run outside.  The cold can be hell on your lungs, but just keep at it and you will be fine.

exercise, cold air, and air pollutants are all a cause of asthma.

Your bronchioles constricting =asthma which is what second poster said. Good thing you stopped smoking, it is not worth it.

I would say get a an inhaler from a doctor (which you said you cannot do) only if you had actual asthma attacks on the regular.

It probably wont do much but caffeine is actually a somewhat of a bronchodilator. See if drinking some coffee or a caffeine pill pre workout might help.
