Please help identify my mushrooms as edible/non-edible
    #22336805 - 10/05/15 12:43 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Please help me identify my mushrooms:

Habitat:
Where does it grow? It was picked in pastures in the Lake District in Cumbria, England.  It was picked in grass pastures next to ferns, at fairly high altitude for England, next to a number of deciduous trees, including the occasional rowan.  Looked to be growing out of the soil.

Gills:
Brown spongey looking gills. no pores coming out.  Bit slimey now.

Stem:
About 2-3 inches length, about 1 inch diameter, slightly bulbous towards end fixed to soil.  solid. firm texture. some hairs, black bits.

Cap:
from 3-6 inch Diameter, brown shiny color, spongey texture underneath, conical/spherical, convex top, one had a slightly bell-shaped cap.

Spore print color:
no spores coming out, but generally brown staining

Bruising:
brown colour when bruises

Other information:
photos of the mushrooms are in this gallery:

Looks like a Leccinum sp that's been in a car accident.

Was anyone hurt?

Yes they were picked yesterday and travelled in the back of the car for a couple of hundred miles. And they also looked like some bugs had had a nibble at them too.  Do you know what type of Leccinum Sp they might be?  I have 6 pics there of the same mushrooms (look the same to me at least), 2 were picked right next to each other, and the third close by.

I can't get you any closer, sorry.  Maybe one of the folks from the UK can help.

Leccinum are mycorrhizal, so whatever you can recall about the tree species will help identify your mushrooms.
