pink oyster grow/questions

Innocukayed some jars with a liquid culture syringe from a vendor, so I assumed it was clean but but I guess I was wrong.
Never grown oysters before so I was wondering if this yellowing was normal? Also doesn't seem like its completely colonizing on all sides, what I mean by that is it isn't as thick on some sides.

I'm gonna spawn these in some buckets to pasteurized straw, seems like the easiest avenue to go.
Also, if anyone has some suggestions on pasteurizing straw please share!

just keep them warm during colonization. make sure they get some air to breathe. if you're doing straw buckets, and you use more than a couple quarts of spawn...you could see pins in less than two weeks! Even one! Pinks are amazingly fast which is why you can cold pasteurize your straw or not even treat it at all! Just soak and inoculate. Usually for me they are colonized in a week or less and pinning on day 10-14.

I had pinks on straw pinning 7 days after spawning at 10%. They were. Pinning in my pantry where I colonize. I heat pasteurized using a bath around 160-165 to start and put the pre soaked straw with gypsum into 5 gal paint strainer bags but pillow cases or even better burlap bags work too. 90 min at 136-150 drain and lay out on a table to cool with a fan turning every half hour. 1-2 hours later its cooled enough to spawn.

Soak your straw for 1-2 days. Use a dash of dish soap to help the straw absorb more water.

I was wondering how wet the straw should be after soaking. If its dripping I'm assuming its too wet.
Those jars look OK to you? I'm worried about the yellow on top.
Also, I was going to use 2 QTS spawn per 5gal bucket but what do you guys recommend?
And I've been reading about misting them after the fruits start growing, what's your opinion on that?

Let the straw drip dry, using the fan to dry and cool helps remove excess moisture as well. I drain and cool my strawon a slanted table so the water drains away. Mist for sure. Two jars per 5 gal pail works for me. I've been having much better results with pinks in bags vs pails. The yellow water is myc piss. I'm supprised those arnet pinning already invetro. My pinks start to pin on agar and seed a few days after colonization. You might want to fruit a jar to verify the culture.

my jars started turning pink so I shook them, should I not have done that?
I didn't have time to make straw yesterday, so im doing it tomorrow.
I think ill try bags next time, whats your procedure for them?
last thing, pinning invitro would work? I thought they needed to be mixed with straw to fruit.

They start to grow pink as they finish colonizing, this shows even on agar. You should have left them and just held out for the spawn day. Even if you have a few pins going its still good to use, the pins are just another inoculation point. A good pink strain will always pin invitro but they need more FAE for a good fruitbody. If your seeing pink myc i think its safe to say you have verified the strain and fruiting a jar wouldn't be needed.

gotcha, thanks for the info.
Either way, since I shook, using them for spawn will still be viable, and a good option? Don't want to just contam.

Yup, your spawn will still be viable and will produce fine. I just harvested 3 lbs. off of a 22 lbs. log an hour ago and had to do the same thing. Pinks do everything by their own time table. I generally have to shake mine to prevent invitro pinning.

sweet.
how long do you pasteurize for? Ive been told a couple times ranging from 60 - 120 minutes..
also, it seems like a pain in the ass, why cant I just load with water into jars and heat bath it, then drain the straw for a while and then use.

I judge my pasteurization times on the initial bath temperature. The range I use is 60-90 minutes at 140-160F. If my starting temp is 160F, I'll soak for 60 minutes, 150F for 75 minutes, and 140F for 90 minutes (although you'll probably need to top up the bath if you're starting that low).
As far as loading into jars, I'm not sure what you had in mind, but I imagine it'd be difficult to get enough pasteurized straw in your jars to be worth it. If you're only planning on stuffing a couple of small bags (like a gallon or less), then that might work. Otherwise, I'd look at RR's videos and try to do something similar with a plastic tub.

yea im doing that with a plastic tub. but im wondering, do I rinse the straw off after soaking/pasteurizing because of the soap used? Im thinking the soap will mess with the spawn

You don't have to rinse. Some of the guys on here that use straw baskets pre-soak with soapy water and just heat up the same water for the pasteurization.

I soapy water soak my straw then heat up a fresh drum of water for the pasteurization, that rinses the soap off enough to where its not noticable. Don't forget to add your gypsum.

I forgot the gypsum, shit. But I'm wondering how long straw pasteurized lasts for. I'm tired as fuck and would loile to just spawn to it in the morning

should be fine
I treat my pasteurized substrate like i do my homebrew. Chill fast and give contams less time to get a foothold. If you have a clean environment to chill your substrate i wouldn't sweat it. I chill outdoors where i know there are bugs so i cool fast and spawn within ~2 hours.

I ended up doing two buckets, but for some reason, one is colonizing the other....not so much. I think its been maybe 4 or 5 days and one is almost completely colonized the homes, the other I cannot see really any signs. Should I toss the uncolonized one before it contains(if it already hasnt) ( might have because I used the straw that sunk to the bottom of the Pasteur bath, I needed it.)

smell it. If you do toss it toss it outside in a shady spot and cover with leaves or mulch.

Gotcha on that. Heard someone say pink oyster smells, and damn they were right. I hope the fruits fon taste as bad as they smell.
Any suggestions for after pins form? I have them in separate trash bags, tied closely as to allow ge and the lids to the buckets cracked
