Well finally back at it. Tried to get a better picture after letting the culture warm for a day but the condensation didn't go away so I wasn't able to. I started two grain masters from one petri dish using pearl millet with a tsp of coffee, gypsum, and calcium carb to buffer. After these colonize I will use them to make more grain spawn. After that I am planning 12 tests using 4 different substrates and two casing preparations. The four substrates are going to be supplemented woodchips, partially composted woodchips, manure supplemented spent oyster substrate, and finally straw. Hopefully one or more of these will work.

The grain spawn has been really slow to take off so that will take awhile to colonize. I have used another petri dish to make liquid mycelium which I used to inoculate two liquid cultures and some flour cakes as another test. Will hopefully see the cakes and the liquid culture taking off soon. Will update when there are changes and hopefully upload some pictures when colonization is farther along.

It's been awhile but finally have some results for good mycelium growth. Grain was slow to colonize. Was only able to do three tests with what worked out. I used straw, composted woodchips, and spent oyster mushroom substrate. The straw and wood chip compost were slow to colonize and contaminated. The spent substrate is almost completely colonized in only a few days with much healthier looking mycelium than was present in the other tests. Will post a pictures soon once the colonization is finished then will case before giving indoor fruiting a shot. The spent substrate appears to be the way to go for healthy growth and fast colonization.

Please do post. I have some very healthy grain of the aloha 'alice' strain. I was thinking about using a similar substrate as shaggy mane. Hopefully by this weekend.

The strain you have is of Macrolepiota procera. I am growing a different species: Chlorophyllum rhacodes. That being said they both grow in very similar conditions in the wild so the same conditions and substrates could be productive for both. I am also interested in experimenting with the species you have so if you have any success with it definitely let me know and I will continue my thread through to the end failure or success. Hope that it helps. I have run into an account of successfully fruiting Macrolepiota procera indoors though apparently the mushrooms were deformed and small, but if I remember correctly they were grown similar to the shaggy mane except live grass was grown in the casing. It has been a year or two since I read the article but if I can locate it again I will post the link.

I recognize the difference in species. Being similar enough, I judged the requirements to bring them to appropriate fruiting conditions would be the same. I'll definitely keel you updated, and be willing to trade for your culture as well. I'll be spawning to a bulk pasteurized sub Friday so results will follow shortly thereafter.

Finally go to casing the one that worked out. Used a standard peat/verm casing with some added activated charcoal. Here are some pictures before casing:

And here is a picture after casing was applied:

Will give it a few days until I see some mycelium poking through before attempting to put it into fruit.

Sounds good. Possibly be interested in trading. Would have to run out a few more petri dishes from my master culture. Let me know.

^ haha.
My parasol is growing some healthy mycelium on composted chicken poo straw. Looks like it'll make it. I'll be using it outdoors when it is ready. First time growing with composted subs. Shaggy manes are loving it too. I'm down to trade now that I know it's good.
Nice sub btw! Looks healthy.

Well after some time trying and experimenting with different temperatures and humidity I was unable to get the shaggy parasol to fruit indoors. Missing something. Tried temperatures near freezing to 70 degrees working from high to low. Either way I'll probably at least use the culture I have to start an outdoor patch or two so I can at least harvest them in the fall. If anyone else gives it a try and has better success let me know.

That's a bummer. Growing composters indoors always seemed rather difficult to me. I hope someone knows more about this and can help you out.
My parasol grew well through the substrate and consolidated well. I spawned it to some compost from my bin last week. It's near my wine cap patch outdoors, which is near a wild shaggy parasol patch. I'll update if anything happens.

Yeah definitely keep me updated. Moved onto the next project for now. Have some morels growing out well with a lot of sclerotia from spores I collected this year. Maybe I will have success with them indoors. Love a challenge. Might try shaggy parasols again in the future indoors if I can find some more clues or ideas that I think might work. Morels are difficult but at least I can find some successes out there to point me in the right direction unlike the shaggys. Heres hoping.
