Shaggy Parasol * 1
    #22335178 - 10/04/15 11:00 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

So I have done a lot of research and haven't been able to find any good information on growing Chlorophyllum Rhacodes. I have a culture from this mushroom that I started on PDYA.

I just took 6 transfers from the clones onto more PDYA and am waiting for them to grow out. The clones had grown ten days in this picture that I took right before I transferred them.

I am planning on eventually growing them on millet then inoculating some bulk straw then probably case them. Mainly I am wondering if anyone thinks this is a good route and if anyone has had any success with this species indoors? Also fruiting parameters would be helpful. Either way I'm gonna give it a go and I will update this thread later with any news on how it is working out.

Thanks for moving it to the right section. I'm still new to using the message boards. And to answer the why question. I think this is an absolutely beautiful mushroom and in my opinion it is also the best tasting mushroom I have eaten. I prefer it over morels.

Do a spread of tests. Try sterilized wood, pasteurized wood and pasteurized straw. Hopefully one will work? I know nothing about this species BTW. What do they grow on in the wild?

I know that they are known to grow in compost piles and on thatch ant mounds. I also found a close relative Chlorophyllum brunneum which I just spawned to an outdoor compost pile today, though I used a multispore inoculation to start that spawn and I had found the original mushroom growing out of leaf litter. The mushroom in the picture I found growing out of wood chips that look to have been there for at least a couple years.

Probably a secondary decomposer try composting some straw and growing similar to white buttons. ive also heard of people growing secondary decomposers on waste from primary decomposers like oysters or shiitakes. Just break it up and sterilize, probably add some gypsum and bran too. Again no experience in this type of cultivation hopefully someone else can chime in.

Nothing I have read has been definitive on what they grow on but many say that they won't grow on finished compost and grows mycelium poorly on uncomposted material. So it seems somewhere in between may be the way to go. Given that I like the idea of waste from primary decomposers since it wouldn't be as broken down as composting with multiple organisms in a pile. I think I may have to grow some oysters and try on straw and spent sub from oysters to see if either works for me. Great idea thanks for the input I never thought of that!

Why would you not want to grow them? They taste really good! Would probably make a damn fine mushroom burger.

I'd try growing them on composted horse poop. I tend to find them on horse trails where people don't clean up after their animals. They like the poo.

Been super busy lately with college and work but have a minute to get on here. Just checked on them and they have grown out nicely though slower now that the transfers don't have a piece of mushroom to provide extra nutrients. Be another couple weeks and I should be ready to transfer to grain. Sorry no pictures since I don't have a camera that works myself and the wife isn't here for me to use her phone. Just an update for anyone who is interested in their progress.

Well here is where they are at now

I am super busy with work and school so don't have the time to continue this at least until winter break so I have them stored in the fridge for now. I also have some cardboard spawn that was growing in the fridge from stem butts and it is completely grown out and fuzzy. I will use that for an outdoor patch later. Sorry it will be a while but when I get back to it in a couple months I will definitely post some more updates.

I've seen shaggy mane grows on google while doing a google image search so maybe you can find a site or info linked to one of those pics. I too have thought about growing these as they are unique in looks and good flavor. Probably would need to dry for market. Heres one site with both shaggy parasol and shaggy mane http://www.mushroommountain.com/grow_your_own/strains.asp

Is your camera good enough for a closeup? I want to compare to some Leucoagaricus I have.

Make sure that you provide insulation for them while in the refrigerator. Refrigerators sometimes freeze things. I've lost a few plates that way.

Thanks for the link. They actually have the parasol mushroom (Marcolepiota procera) which is in a different genus and species than the shaggy parasol (Chlorophyllum rachodes). Though I am excited because I would like a culture of that species as well and I couldn't find a place to order them until now. As to the picture I just took a look at them and there is too much condensation on the petri dish now that they are in the fridge but I can probably get a close up after they warm up when I am able to get back to growing them out. Finally thanks for the input on insulating them I just sandwiched them with some layers of bubble wrap to be safe. About a month and a half of college left then I will have a month to mess with this. Get some going on grain spawn at that point and go from there.
