Condensation problems using tub in tub incubator
    #2233241 - 01/10/04 03:15 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I just recently began using a tub in tub incubator heated with an aquarium heater. First off, I only have a 100W aquarium heater and I'm not sure if it's sufficiently heating the water. Does a pump make a large difference in uniform heating? could the lack of a pump render the heater useless or at least very inefficient?

Secondly, I've noticed much more condensation on the inside of my jars now that they are in an tub in tub. What could cause this and what might fix it? Possibly putting holes in the smaller, enclosed tub? This is the only remedy I can think of seeing as there would be no difference in humidity or temp between the two tubs. Any feedback or tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

is what i did when i had the same problem. it worked.
presumably the inner tub has a lid? does it need it? is it airtight?
i had a spare hygrometer so i stuck it in the incubator - used to be 95%, now an acceptable 70.

:kiss:hope this helped. sk

you're probably getting condensation on the inside of your jars now because they are warmer than they used to be and the jars might be trying to evaporate off some water. I have a 100W heater in my TNT and it doesn't heat all the way to 86 but it'll get pretty close. Not sure about the pump but everyone usually says that its not necesary.

A pump seems to be needed more with larger incubation containers using the tub in tub method.

Thanks guys, Now I just have to figure out a way to put some holes in the inner tub. I don't have a drill so it could be a little difficult.

also, Shirley, I would assume that the holes in the outer container are also to eliminate condensation but do they not also allow light into the incubator? (my inner container is not completely opaque) do you think this amount of light would be a problem?

Thanks for all the help.

The pump in the tub isn?t needed. I came up with the idea. Here is the first pic and nobody had a problem with the incubators before I did it.

It simply makes for much more even heating in the incubator rather then heating from the bottom up. Which means the bottom jars are warmer then the top ones and I didn?t like that idea. The pump seems to work for me anyway.

My friend has noticed the same thing in her BRF jars.
Her setup is the same as Magash's with the pump and
she uses a Repti-Temp 500R thermostat to control a
150W submersible heater. The heater is set on full and
the 500R has a remote sensor sitting on the jars. The
500R is adjusted to maintain around 83 degrees.
This setup lets her know exactly what the temps are at the
jars.  The innoc holes in the jars are open so she doesn't
want to cut holes in the lid of the rubbermaid.
Does the condensation cause a problem? :alert:
