Nothing he could do legally. He's stuck with it. Courts won't help. Used cars are sold as is unless otherwise specifically stated. Buyer beware. It's always the buyers job to check the car out before they buy to make sure it runs good. Besides threatening the dude or beating him up he's screwed legally.
My buddy bought an old pos car for like 1200 that did t even run. I called him an idiot multiple times. Eventually he got someone to fix it, but he had it for like a month trying to figure out how to make it start.

Man, that's sketchy. Sometimes lessons are learned at cost. I doubt he will ever do this again.

true that
The car I bought was a piece of shit. Everything seemed ok but the owner hid a lot of problems that I didn't realize it had until I drove it a bit. Overall, I probably paid 1k more than it was worth. But now I know what to look for and got some good diagnosis/repair experience fixing the problems.

It was sold as "in excellent shape everything works perfect", not as is...

Even with it being told it's 'in excellent shape and runs great,' I doubt there's much he can do. The buyer beware law wins out in most cases, even in houses, and they're the biggest purchase a person makes in their life.
He should have done his part by taking it for a real test drive and making sure everything major was in working order. Buying a used and especially abused high mileage car is a crapshoot. You can get unlucky no matter what, but that problem would have been obvious had he actually taken a proper look at it before buying it.

Yup it's still sold as is. Unless the ad specifically states their is a warranty or something similar it's sold as is.

Still is false advertising and it seems like there should be something people can do in those situations...

There technically is, small claims court. No guarantee you'd win or see a dime though. That's what it's there for. To settle disputes like this.

I feel like I remember a judge judy episode where that buyer beware law didn't apply. I think in most cases it does apply, but a few it doesn't, so might be worth still checking into, but again there wasn't any name on the title so im sure that part was illegal anyway which might be enough right there to get his money back

No chance any court will help him out. It's not technically false advertising.

Well i just went to the southside with him and my other mechanic buddy.
I drove the car - its shaking like a motherfucker. If you dont slam on the gas it doesnt go oast first gear. When i maxed out the pedal to test it, it went all the way to the 6.5k RPM line, so i drove it the fuck back to the lot he had. Even before i did that when i was driving it, it started smellijg like burning plastic. The trans fluid is completely burned
The car itself was a taxt before this. The taxi company bought it in a police auction.
The title that the guy gave him didnt gave the sellers name on it, it was the title from the taxi company who he bought it from 3 years ago. He neve4 signed the title in his name or registered it.
Oh, and the taxi company says they dont sell cars -they junk them. They said until a car is broken past the point of repair thats worth more than the car they ride the fuck out of it(i called them)
Basically the trans is fucked. The gasket was leaking oil, too.
At 80k miles i doubt its worth the repair costs

just pull the tranny off and get a new one from the junk yard, you can do that shit in a day. Im not entirely sure but you might even be able to just drop the pan off the tranny and replace the shit and put the pan back up. Ive seen a tranny pulled once I don't remember much of it but I know it came out pretty quick once it was jacked up

Mexicans, actually.
The "stereotypical" black guy around here drives late model Impalas or random granny cars like Buick Century's or Delta 88's and shit like that.

I'll pay more attention just out of curiosity (because now I can't not pay attention even if I wanted to) but I don't think I've ever noticed a single black guy driving a Crown Vic around here. I pay a lot of attention to Crown Vics though. I see a Crown Vic and I'm looking in it and look at the driver to see if it's a cop. Even when I'm not doing anything wrong, I'm always stuck in that "oh shit the police" mentality. Too much negative contact with them in my life I guess.
