me and my buddy were going to both build one and connect our houses with 802.11, unfortunatlly hes been acting like a HUGE pussy since his g/f broke up with him 6 months ago....
I think technicly were within distance of each other for just setting them outside, but figured the can would help improve speed and narrow the footprint.

How much can you juice these things for and still be legal?
I think I even have an old Directv sattellite dish laying around somewhere I can use.

The 802.11a standard is designed to operate in the 5-GHz frequency range. Specifically, the FCC has allocated 300 MHz of spectrum for unlicensed operation in the 5-GHz block, 200 MHz of which is at 5.15 MHz to 5.35 MHz, with the other 100 MHz at 5.725 MHz to 5.825 MHz. The spectrum is split into three working "domains." The first 100 MHz in the lower section is restricted to a maximum power output of 50 mW (milliwatts). The second 100 MHz has a more generous 250-mW power budget, while the top 100 MHz is delegated for outdoor applications, with a maximum of 1-watt power output. In contrast, 802.11b cards can radiate as much as 1 watt in the United States. However, most modern cards radiate only a fraction (30 mW) of the maximum available power for reasons of battery conservation and heat dissipation

Free satallite is way too complex to get the whole idea in one forum post so I'll kinda gloss over it. Basically you get the dish and box somehow and then program the card to decrypt channels. Programing the card is the hard part. basically you need special hardware called a programmer/Glitcher. The cards are smat cards, that is to ay they have microchips in them so they are kinda dificult to change. Even after you've put the code onto the card you have to keep the code up to date every few weeks maybe every few days as the sat. companies are waging an ongoin war against people who steal the signal.
If people actually want more I may be persuaded to write more and all the links. Until then a little bit of laziness has set in.

I have all of the items mentioned, except the card programmer.
How does the satellite co. update my card as it is?

They have a stream that is part of the signal they beam down to you. The box that holds your smart card writes basically a file containing the channels you can have and their unlock codes. Everyonce in while the company sends a signal to your box to re-write these codes. Or they change the unlock keys or they otherwise change the stream.
Basically long story short. That box does it with a signal from the sat.

Not sure. I know some of them have gone over ten miles. That would probably require using a cantenna on both computers, and probably sattellite dishes too.

I got smart card programmers for sale there ISO 7816 with the 3.68 crystal these will work to program Dish Network cards not Direct Tv. If you got Dish Network and you want to know more about getting free Tv send me a PM and ill give you a few links. its really pretty simple once you get a grasp of it.
