I've always referee to those as butterfly bits. They work great for drilling holes in tubs. I start slowly in reverse to heat up the plastic to avoid cracking.

Those are also known as "spade bits", and using those words gives you a wider range of options on an ebay search. Home depot doesn't seem to carry the regular paddle bits anymore, they have a special twisted shape for biting into the wood, counter productive for plastic and expensive. I also advocate the reverse motion.

That's my preferred type. The centre bit centralizes it and the outer spikes just bore a hole in the plastic so a disc falls out on the other end. With other bits it can bite and tear up the plastic, these just wear their way through.
I then put a lighter into the hole, I heat the plastic indirectly, this both smoothens off the hole edges and strengthens it since as the plastic retracts it gets thicker.
As above I have heard them called spade drill bits, usually for wood.

I purchased a 1½ inch spade bit for my drill. Alas, I couldn't find one at home depot for my Dremel, but it should work all the same with my drill. I am going to make 4 more tubs today! Yay!

Just get a piece of 2"metal pipe. Heat it with a torch and bam, you're done my friend. No cracking.

That works well too. The smell of melting plastic gets to be a bit much if you make a few tubs at the same time though

That's why I didn't do t in the first place. I have a very sensitive nose and thought burning plastic was just a bad idea.
But I do like my new blow torch.

I just cracked two of my tubs!
I decided just to use the dremel with the tip I showed in the original picture to finish my remaining holes and tubs. Out of curiosity, are these tubs a total loss? One, the hole near the top crack just as I was finishing it and broke off a piece extending it's size by 50%. The other did the same but also put a minor crack extending from the hole. Could I tape it up or putty it to make it smaller? Damn it.

My hole saws have always been great in my tubs. I put my drill on the highest setting and go light on pressure.
Muda,
Can you post a picture of those tub configurations? I'm about to make some new ones and want to check them out.

Other than high speed setting on the drill one other hole saw tip: run the drill counter clockwise. This will reduce the chance of the teeth from the hole saw catching and ripping the material you're cutting. It also takes forever so I usually run it counter clockwise to start then switch over to clockwise once I get a hole started.

Thanks for the advice, I will give it a shot.

How does counterclockwise matter if the teeth are symmetrical and pointed straight downward?

All bits are designed to bite while spinning clockwise. No matter what those teeth look like, they're not symmetrical.
I mean unless were talking very very specific bits.

Word. I'll take your word for it. My hole saw bit looks symmetrical. I'll build a tub and spin it counterclockwise just to see.

You can just tape it. I have tons of cracked tubs taped together.

Thanks, man. I'm probably going to try that soon. I'll assume it doubles for bottles and bulk.
Are the bottom holes ironed Poly squares taped on?
