Karode, I respect you more than you give me credit.  Youre right, its unfair of me to generalize and lump smokers into a stupid category.

All the people talking about buying seeds makes growing cactus cheap...  my experience has been that buying seeds can be very expensive.  Trich seeds are cheap, sure, but some of the rarer globular species can start to add up.  Look at some of the well known non sponsor catalogs and you'll find that even thirty seeds of some species can start to approach $10-15 usd... For example, some of the aztekium, turbinicarpus, ariocarpus and pelecyphor species can really start to add up.  Cactus collections can be stupid expensive... just my interpretation of the situation.

Search for better vendors and the price will come down.  If you do a good job with growing the seeds you still end up with 30 plants for less than the price of one mature plant.  How is that not cheap?   Plus, once you have some good plants and can propagate with cuttings then you can trade for new stuff at zero cost to yourself beyond a little shipping, in a few years you'll have seeds to trade as well.

Patience grasshopper.  You act like people should be just giving away plants that are extremely difficult and time consuming to grow and want the rarest cacti in the world in your collection without putting out the coin.  It takes many years to build a collection, I suppose if you want EVERYTHING RIGHT NOW then yes, that's going to take some expenditure, but that's just you being greedy and impatient.  Buy some seeds here and there, grow them out, make friends here and do trades for new stuff on the marketplace.  If you chill out and take it slow, you can amass a very nice collection with minimal cost in a few years.  I seriously doubt many of the main posters in the EG are filthy rich.

I'm sure not....

One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'
