collecting cactus is a rich person hobby

That about sums it up.  I know some of the forum goers have thousands of dollars in their collection.  It's not like we all just went out and blew three thousands on plants in a month, but over time it really adds up.  You can even factor in lights, electricity, nutes and sometimes water.  Though not all of us have an indoor cactus / succulent collection for year round enjoyment.  It's like the more species you collect the more you want.

I love collecting cacti.

I probably havent spent more than 300 and have what i would consider to be a sizable collection for indoors

100% true about it being addicting, i cant stop buying them

Yeah between seeds and plants and substrate im over 300 just this month.  I spent more last month.  I think I need an intervention.  What's worse is now im hooked on globulars where as before I was only growing colmnars.

There are sooo many awesome globular cactus.

dunno, cacti is a grat hobby, that in fact costs a bit, but definitely not only for rich people

1 there is a lot of ways to get cacti cheap, trading and propagating , growing from seed even the rarest species, helps you also to get them free.

2 Despite i do buy cacti and have some great exemplars (and some of those cost me around 20$) i'm pretty sure that i spend on cacti much less than an average smoker spends on cigarettes

do you think smoking is for rich people?

Im not sure why youre being argumentative.  You can spend your money however you want.  That said, I think smoking is for stupid people, not rich people.

I'm definitely not rich. I have a nice collection and probably spent less that $300 in 15 years. And, now that they have grown quite a bit, I would estimate my collection to be worth ~$2000. I don't use supplemental lighting either.

It can be as expensive or as cheap as you want. Patience and self control can save you lots of money in this hobby. Don't splash money on impulse buys. You learn this after a while.

I live simply. I have very little money. One of the enjoyments I have in life is starting cacti from seed. My oldest colony of cacti that I started are a basket of Epiphyllums. I started them about a decade ago. I could spend scads of money on plants, but to me. .I find it rewarding to watch my plants grow from seed. I love hearing people's reactions when I have gifted them a plant and they say things like, (you grew this from seed?).

One doesn't necessarily need to spend a whole lot of money at a hobby. Some people make use of what they have. When I start my babies, I use yoghurt cups that I have ran through the dishwasher. It recycles and saves me money on an initial colony pot.

I would say the major factor is how much you love your plants and the care you put into providing for their welfare.

Rich people, into BDSM, have Slave-boys on leashes, who do Whatever they are told, including washing dishes. ("guys"). LOL

The place I live in already had the dishwasher, its not like I bought it or installed it. If you look up who invented the dishwasher and why. .. It actually was in an effort to save the inventor: Time, money, and chipped dishes.

Why would I want to do something as tedious as that ??

Or not. .. LOL.

My point, was that a Dishwasher was in fact invented by a woman to save money on the cost of broken dinnerware. Even today a good quality set of Dishes, can get pretty expensive.

Any hobby has different levels expense and if you want to spend stupid money on them, you can.  Cactus collecting is as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be.  I personally grow from seed as that greatly reduces cost.

 I grow cactus because they are cheap in terms of fertilizer, water, etc.

At the same time I have spent over 300$ for 3 trichocereus

Getting heavily into the hobby is for the rich but the hobby itself is not only for the rich.

I spent stupid money on certain specimens, because they are already years old.

The majority of my purchases don't amount to much. Also, I am in it to mass produce, so that I can sell cheaply and have an overabundance. A few more years, and I will have more than I Can ever sell.

I sold a large Lophophora williamsii to an American collector for 250 bucks.
