You'll find mushrooms twisted like that all the time. That one looks like one edge of the cap was pinned under something. Another odd one is when one comes up directly under a thin root, so when it expands it ends up looking sort of like a bow tie.
oh yea. shrooms do everything they can to get their spores up into the wind for dispersal. chanterelles form crazy rosettes of gills that look like pustules or something on the tops of their caps when the can't get the edges up into the O2. the biggest matsi i ever found was stuck under roots like you said, tm. weighed about a pound. crazy malformed two-parter.
