Do you have a greenhouse?

I am looking to buy or build a greenhouse. If you have one, do you mind sharing its pros and cons? Should I buy one or build from scratch? I would like to grow vegetables, herbs and I have a collection of cacti that I would like to put in there so that they can grow in the winter. What are your guys opinions?

bumping for intrest. i would like to build a greenhouse for cacti too, but i would like one solid one, because that would be placed 4 km away fromy house, and in case of strong winds/rains, it should be able to resist. waiting for Greenhouse owners to explain on how they build theyrs

I used to have a house where I put in one of those aluminum framed kit things. Think it was around $300. It was 4x6 feet and about 5.5 feet tall at the top. I could walk around in it if I held my head down. It had a sliding door and one roof vent with an automatic opener. The box said "not for high wind areas" but that wasn't mentioned on the website, and I didn't see that until it was delivered. I put it up anyways, and it survived some pretty harsh winds. Probably around 70mph a few times.
With the door/vent open it would get up to about 145f in the summer. I had to string an extension cord out there to run a fan during the day to get my peppers to grow.... And I thought they liked heat.
If it freezes in the winter where you live, you will need to heat the greenhouse during winter. A few light freezes should be ok, but if you get hard freezes a greenhouse isn't gonna stop those.
Get real glazing, if you build your own. Don't do the stapling clear plastic up thing.
I would probably recommend building my own, instead of a kit. Depending on your climate and how big you want it to be...

I wanted to build a green house out of polycarbonate sheets because they are very well insulated. But I live in a very cool climate, so it might not be for everyone.

I did A kit-Build, this last summer.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22090484/page/1
I got the kit, and fastened it to pressure treated frame, put into a channel trench. The "floor" is made of concrete paver stones. I'll try and do my best to respond to this thread, and you can message me too. I really enjoy mine. I still have tropicals in it, now.. in October, yet. However, some of the more tender stuff is starting to have to come in, now finally.

I live in a Mediterranean climate (hot dry summers and warm wet winters), so have no real need for a green house. My cacti live outside all of the year, in the summer months, June to August I water them, and at this time a greenhouse would be SO hot it would kill them, March to May and Sep to November I let God water them, Dec to Feb they sit in cold frames to keep them dry.

I just finished constructing my 8x16 lean to. I framed it with 2x6 lumber stained with australian timber oil. The timber oil is very good. The framing sits on a concrete perimeter pad. The floor is about 4-6" of pea gravel. The first 4' of the wall I sided with T1-11 and insulated. This creates a skirt that does a great job of blocking wind and shades the floor. The next 4'+ of the walls are glazed with 1/8" acrylic. Finally the roofing is tinted sun tuf panels. I put gutters up and and made a rain barrel to collect the water it catches. Since it's a lean to I can sit at my bedroom window and stare out into the greenhouse. It makes a great view. If you have construction/framing experience I would say go for it. This has been a very rewarding experience. The whole thing has cost me about $1600, and a similar kit that you still have to put together cost about $5000. I still have shelves to put up and eventually I want to build a plywood aquarium for an aquaponics system.

Not everyone has the luxury of living in a warm, frost-free environment. Do you intend to heat your greenhouse? By what method?

Yes, it will be heated. Right now we are just leaving the bedroom window open to let the heat sort of spill out into the greenhouse. But, there are two vents on the brick foundation of the house. You can see one of them in the picture I posted above. I plan to take some 4" ducts and run them to the main trunk under the house and bring them out of the crawl space vents. This way the greenhouse should stay the same temp as the house. If our heat is on, it will be warming the greenhouse. And if our AC is on, it will be cooling the greenhouse. I also included passive ventilation for heat to escape the top of the roof, and I have a place to mount a solar attic fan to help with cooling in the warmer months.
