Habitat: On a dead tree in the woods. !00 to 300 feet above sea level, Washington, King County Where does it grow? Eg. woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude, etc. What does it grow on? Eg. soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?), etc.
Gills: Brown, Orange brown, attached to stem. Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc.
Stem: brown, light orange/brown, 2 inches in diameter, 9 inches long, solid. Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc.
Cap: Wavy/ convex on the full size, convex on the young mushroom. It too is brown to orange/brown, 8 inches in diameter. Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.
Spore print color: Orange/brown. Not much of a print it moistens the paper orange/brown under the cap. Very important!
Bruising: Not much bruising, maybe some Blackening in around the edges of the cap. Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.
Other information: Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.

Gymnopilus (junonious in particular) maybe? I have absolutely zero experience with this genus.

What i meant by the way was that i have zero experience with this genus so it's very possible that I'm wrong but I'm happy to be wrong if i can learn from others pointing out why. It's not a genus i ever come into contact with over here in England but they are around. So currently I've just seen a many pictures on this forum.

This collection should be considered Gymnopilus ventricosus if there is no green-bluing, but you should definitely compare to Gymnopilus junonius. Let us know if you see anything unique. (Mycologists are still learning the fundamental differences between these two species.

Would it be helpful to take a couple photos of it after it has been removed from it natural Habitat?

Yes, definitely. You'll want to gently wiggle them from the wood surface to get the whole mushroom.
Try to take several specimens of different growth stages and place them in order of size side-by-side. Capturing clear, well lit features (gills, stipes, caps, primordia) will help!

They are indeed that species.
Yesterday I switched all of the G. junonius observations on the west coast to G. ventricosus, as we don't get the Gymnopilus junonius sensu auct. Amer. out west.
MO distribution maps for G. junonius and G. ventricosus look a lot better now.
G. ventricosus: http://mushroomobserver.org/name/map/660
G. junonius: http://mushroomobserver.org/name/map/2412
The different species explains why people say that G. junonius is active in the east and inactive in the west.
