Can't get perlite!!
    #22326945 - 10/03/15 05:39 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

The shop I would get it from is sold out and won't be getting any in for ages. I been trying to substitute by using wet tissue and mud for damp conditions but nothing. Had a few little shrooms off it that where quite strong for there size but that's it. Tried a second grow but nothing so far. Not even any little heads. There's only the white Moldy stuff on the top and bottom of the cake now and the cake feels very damp. Any ideas what I can do? Also does fanning it really help? And do u take it out the fruiting chamber to fan it? I don't have an electric fan btw so can i fan it by hand? Also I thought of blow drying it a bit just to dry it out slightly?
So any ideas what I can use around me that can replace perlite?... I heard egg shells? Do I mix them with something? And should I dry my cake a bit and wait for more shroom mild to grow? Thanks for ur help

If there are any hydroponic grow shops in your area they usually always have it. If not they can Usually order it for you. If not you could also proably use hydroton expanded clay pellets.

Vermiculite/hydroton/lava rocks. Yes fanning helps. Fan by hand. Leave in chamber. And by blow dry you literally mean a blow dryer......no. Reread an SGFC Tek as well as some pf tek.

...ok I'm going to actually be useful to someone! Perlite holds in lots of h2o and likes to hold onto it for long time which aides in keeping up humidity. Rocks, clay, rags even, will not be good sub...definitely not rocks. Hydroponics store is store that sells..u guessed it, hydroponic equipment. Lots of mj cultivators use hydro and gardeners serious about their craft as well. They would be the seller of lava rocks. look up in your yellow pages under gardening supplier or similar. Cakes last til cultivator ruins them or they are spent on nutes and moisture. Number of "grows" called flushes, depends on same nutes and moisture but at least 2 or 3 flushes if I understand correctly is to be expected. Some get as many 7 or 8 I've read on here. Read FAQ and just use search here at forum. Lots of invaluable info that no matter readers grasp of wtf they r reading, is obvious to those being asked for advise probably has or hasn't been done already.

Tellin ya tho bro..walmart ship to sight..hasn't let me down yet

Perlite holds water on the surface, while having lots of surface area, allowing for lots of evaporation off of those surfaces. Pretty much everything else suggested will absorb the water. It won't evaporate nearly as fast.

If there are any garden supply stores in your area call around and ask them for perlite if they don't have it ask if they can order it. Somebody should be able to get some. If you want to build a proper fruiting chamber your going to need it. If not later on down the road when you ask for help on this site people are just going to tell you to build a SGFC. 1/4 holes 2 inches apart on all 6 side With 4-6 wet perlite.

If you can't have it shipped to your house because you live with your parents or you are not telling your room mates what you are doing then you are an asshole and should stop growing felony level narcotics in their home.
If somehow that is not the case (which I doubt)
AND you really have gone to all the garden supply and big box stores (which WILL have it)

Then
1. go online
2. go to Walmart's website
3. place an order for free in store pickup at the nearest location to you
4. then start doing bulk in monotubs and never ever have to buy perlite again. :cookiemonster:

There are a few good alternatives to perlite. Verm and mud are not. As suggested clay pellets can work but so can fish tank rocks, hydroton, and believe it or not, gravel.

Good luck

The OP didn't ask what we personally thought about various sources.

I don't care much for walmart either and source my perlite, verm, and coir at a small local shop.

He couldn't find any so we gave him oprions where to get it... as damn near every town has a WM...
