An epic grow (hopefully)
    #22326875 - 10/03/15 04:34 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I'm back I guess. Its been awhile since i've posted or done a grown. For the past week or so i've been in the mood to grow again.  Today I ordered 3 syringes,12 sealed jars that already have sterilized brown rice flour and vermiculite and a grow bag. I don't know what the strains are going to be until they get here since I bought some random syringes. They were cheaper. I was going to try to make this a mini grow log. I'll update again when everything comes in the mail.

While i'm here I want to ask a question. I don't like using grow bags. I've used them in the past but I think they take too long to colonize. The bag already has sterilized brown rice flour and vermiculite in it. I wanted to open the bag and put some in each of these plastic cups, inject some spores in them and wrap and cover the tops with aluminum foil.

Do you think they will contaminate? What would be the difference between me sterilizing substrate myself and putting the substrate in a jar or cup and opening the bag and using the bag's substrate? Its already sterilized. I've tired this once before in a shotglass. The shotglass colonized fast, fruited and it didn't contaminate. I don't know if I just got lucky though.

If you are going to just tear it apart, you should just buy the brf and Verm and put it together yourself...no those cups will not work, you need to at the LEAST steam your jars...those cups simply will not withstand a steam cycle.

Whelp that suck. I don't have a pressure cooker so I cant steam them. I've bought jars from websites before. I've never had any problems with contamination. I'll either buy the brf, verm and a pressure cooker or i'll just inject the spores in the bag and be patient. I'll probably end up doing that. My jars should finish colonizing before the bag finishes.

With BRF jars you can use a large pot and steam them at a good simmer for about 90 minutes, water an inch or two deep at the bottom of the jar, put something on the bottom of the pot to keep them off the metal. I've had no problems using that method, prior to getting a PC

I've bought from ebay before, a 6 pack of brf jars, for like 35$. The jars were packed wayy too tightly and the ratios of brf to verm were off as well. Jars barely colonized at all. Complete waste of money. Just save your money for a decent PC and jump into grains, it is well worth it. I still have my Presto 23qt, 80$ from amazon.

For 35 bucks you could buy enough verm and brown rice to make a couple hundred jars.

Exactly. That's why those sites with "pre-made" jars or all-in-one grow kits are such a scam. They make money off people that don't want to put in the time and effort to get what they want. There are no short-cuts in this hobby.

I just don't like the idea of ordering premade mushroom growing substrate. It's alot more discrete to Do it yourself. It is also alot more rewarding. I have taken many trips but the first one from fruits that I grew myself was a very rewarding experience.

I agree, once I got my PC, I was like why even bother doing cakes, I'm jumping right to grains. Followed an old tek from shroomology using a 6 qt dub tub. Despite many noobish mistakes, I was still able to have a great first flush. It just goes to show how easy it is to grow cubes.

OP you don't need a PC to steam cakes.  You need a pot with a lid to steam cakes. Buy some proper widemouth half pint jars those plastic cups are not going to hold up.

Thanks for all you guy's suggestions.Yep Ebay is where I bought the jars from. There all 1/4th jars. They colonize faster than half pints. I figured from all those 1/4th jars and plastic cups.I would have just as much shrooms as if I used half pints.

I have a pot with a lid so I can at least steam the jars. I was going to fruit the 1/4th cakes or stack them. Put them in the fruiting chambe,r mist the walls and fan. Hopefully everything works out.

I already bought everything so its too late to get my money back. Next time I grow,I'll buy a pressure cooker, sterilize the substrate myself and start casing.

I thought these plastic cups would work because I seen a couple people on this forum grow with them. Do you think glass cups will work?

Glass cups can work but jars are better. If your spending money then buy jars and get your moneys worth.

I'm just going to use glass cups this time. I'll make sure they're clear and see through so I can see the mycelium growth.

Are you broke? If your spending money on glass cups understand they don't last as long as jars and a foil lid is nit nearly as good as a jar lid. There is a reason we recommend jars.

If you are broke and just using your own drinking ware then fine. But I can never help but feel that if someone doesn't have $20 to buy jars that perhaps growing mushrooms shouldn't really be on their list of priorities.

Although I know it clearly feels like it when the myc is growing for the first time, faster colonization really isn't *that* big of a deal, probably not worth making cakes that are so much smaller.

The reason for that is that you're going to be growing them for *months* after birthing, because cakes are very capable of putting out multiple flushes.  It took me five weeks from inoculation to picking my first mushrooms, and two months later I'm a few days away from dunking for fourth flush, and they're still going.

It's probably not worth reducing the long term yields just to save a week or so on colonization.

You should be able to find a dozen wide mouth half pints (which seem to colonize better than the tall regular mouth ones I started with) for about $10.  Do that.

I'm not broke. If I was then I wouldn't have bought the syringes, jars, tub that i'm going to use as a fruiting chamber and grow bag. I didn't buy any glass ware. I was going to use the glass cups from my kitchen. I wasn't even going to buy the grow bag. The only reason I bought it was to maybe get some extra shrooms. I don't even have to use glass cups. I could always inject it in the bag. I didn't want to spend more money if I didn't have to.

@Sivarted

I was going to maybe stack the cakes. If I stack them then the cakes will be almost as big as half pint cakes. Yep I'll either use the glass cups,go buy some half pint jars or inject in the bag. I don't know what I'm going to do yet.

I filled up two glasses of brown rice and virmiculite that I got from the grow bag,put aluminum foil on top and I injected on the side of the cups. They both got cobweb and moldy so I threw them away. All I have left are those 12 jars. Only four out of 12 of the jars are growing Myclium. I thought at least six or seven would have took off. Do you think I should just wait it out and see if the other ones do anything? During the day its between 72-79 degress and at night and in the morning its cooler. Right now its only 69 degress in my house which is too cold for the jars. So I have heater on in my room in hopes of raising the temp.  I lost my camera so I cant take any pics right now,

So you put pre-sterilized brf/verm in a glass cup? and just injected it with the spores?
Did you use a SaB ?
Was the glasses at least sanitized as well?
Why did you put foil on top, was that the only way to seal the glass?
Was there holes for GE or dry layer a verm to keep baddies away?
Why didn't you just inject the grow bag?..
The jars have foil on them too now?
Make sure they can breathe. Leave the holes exposed so they can.

Post pics too, other experienced people can spot things instantly.

I put the pre sanatize substrate in sanatized cups and put aluminum foil on top. The foil was the only way to seal the tops. I didnt put dry verm on top of the cakes.A few days later they got cobweb and there was orange and red contaminated spots on the cakes. I should have injected in bag. I left the holes on the jars exposed so they should be getting enough air. Im not stressing or anything because I at least have 4 jars that are colonizing. I just hope the other 8 start colonizing too. The next time I grow i'm just going to say fuck it and buy a pressure cooker and start casing. I cant post pics until I buy another camera.

But the thing is they may colonize and contam later. I had brf jars start colonizing but then slowly but surely trich started appearing and took over the jar. How did you inject the jars.
