Mushpunx spawn along 1

Hey all! Spawning a bunch of tubs this weekend so I figured Id write up how I personally like to do it. I go as simple as possible when managing a bunch of tubs at once like this.

This is the spawn Im using, 5quart spawn bags all from the same culture.

I will be making substrate for 5 tubs at a time. I start off by putting 4 bricks of coir in a tote, with an 8qt bag of vermiculite and a handfull of gypsum for each brick. I pour in 3.5-4 qts boiling water per brick of coir.
Hamloaf does his coir in a pretty similar fashion, he wrote up a great tek on it the other day Ill try to remember to add a link to it!
I like lots of straw in my coir. I start by chopping up the straw into 1-3 inch pieces, the smaller the better. I filled a 5 gal bucket with dry chopped straw, should be enough for about 25 percent straw per tub.

Next I add a little dishsoap (enough for a sink of dishes) and fill the bucket with water. I let it soak a few hours.

After the soak, I drain the straw. I put a big pot of water on the stove, enough to fill the bucket, and heat it to 175-180 F.
This is to pasturize the straw, it needs to sit at between 170-140F for 1 hour. I pour the water in and cap the bucket. In about a half hour I check the temp, if its sinking below 140 I add more water at temp but I almost never need to, it usually finishes up about 150F at the 1 hour point. I then drain the straw.
While my straw is pasturizing, I washed out my tubs with soap and water and lined the tubs... I use 3 mil clear plastic dropcloth. Its about 5 bucks a roll from the paint section of a hardware store, it lines plenty of tubs and is the best liner Ive found so far. I tape up the holes in the tubs with duct tape or packing tape.

Next I mix my pasturized straw into my tote of coir. I mix it up really well and then divide it into 5... this mix made enough substrate for about 10-11 quarts per tub.

Next I add in my spawn and mix up my tubs thoroughly, I try to get the top as level as I can.
I only did 4 tubs today, Im doing 16 tubs so Im just spawing 4 at a time.
I have to hit the store up to get more vericulite, Im gunna mix up a bucket of straight coir to put a thin layer of coir/verm as a thin top layer on the tubs just to keep any straw from sticking up.
I will update when I have all the tubs spawned and once theyve been fruited!

Where do you get your straw? I bought some straw online but I don't think it was the right kind. It's by Simply Design and I think it's craft straw. Is there a difference?

This straw I think came from Michaels or something, like six bux a bale.. pricey haha But I usually get a few big bales this time of year from the sticks and they last most of the year
Its the reflection giving the bags a weird tint.
For the spawn bags I prep my rye the same as for jars, I didn't really follow a tek but I did learn to pack the PC and how to fold the t yvek sleeves into the bags proper by watching RR letsgrowmushrooms sawdust and sawdust inoculation section.. it shows how to use spawn bags

Going to give this tek a try for the PE and Puerto Rican mono's I have planned for this weekend. Only used straw for edibles before. Keen to see the results.

it is a surfactant, and will help get rid of the waxy coating on the straw for shorter soaks, allowing it to absorb more moisture.

Doesn't soap kill bacteria? Would that harm the amount of good bacteria left over from pasteurization?

Nah the soap dissipates and you won't even know you used the soap once all is said and done. BL is absolutely correct over what benefits the addition of dish soap brings to the rinsing/soaking cycle with straw. Another way to put it is that the dish soap acts as a "wetting agent".
Nice write up, mushypunx. Correct. You and I do coir in a very similar (almost identical) way.
You know, I have listened to punk rock for over 25 years. For the first 2 decades I was one of those punks that only knew punk as a way of life and music style, haha. I used to use wheat straw too (about 4 years ago) in my cube subs. Straw is pretty sick, but have since simplified my bulk sub prep by ditching the wheat straw for a 50/50 manure/coir substrate with the addition of vermiculite and gypsum.

BL is spot on about the dish soap, without it sometimes the straw will feel dry in places after a soak. It really makes a difference. Some people soak overnight and that's probably better but I've never had a problem letting it soak like maybe 2-6 hours.
I dunno about its effect on bacteria though
I do know people also add lime but I cant remember why.
Edit: hah Ham beat me to it

Lime is added to spike the PH of the pasteurization bath and straw. A basic environment thwarts the growth of competitor molds and bacteria. At the same time the mushroom mycelium will have little to no problem ripping through a basic substrate. Don't skimp on the lime.

Up the mushroom punx!!!
Horse poo rules and I would totally use it in my sub. But my license is suspended still and I live in the inner city. A little ways to get to any horse farms. I did locate one that's unusually close by, Im trying to work up my nerve to go knocking before winter and stock up!
I think CVG / Straw is the next best thing, especially if you have to fill a lot of tubs at once its pretty manageable. I think straw intimidates new c ultivators because they have to pasturize but it really is just as easy as fixing up coir
How much lime do you add Ham? I gotta buy a bag for my casing mix per these tubs anyways I should start adding it in the straw again then!

Indeed. The non-addition of lime is not a deal breaker, but it never hurts to put a punishing on invaders when ever possible. Just 1 cup of lime is added per ten gallons of water.

Yea man those bales are fine! I see the decorative bales of straw all over the place this time of year and I think its great for people who don't live in the country. Sometimes they can be pricey but I see them around for five or six bucks. If you don't do tons of tubs it will last a while
