2 cakes, same spore, different sized mushrooms.

So in my year of study of psilocybin mushrooms, I came across a strange, yet probably normal, "phenomenon" (didn't know any other word for it)

One cake, has short stubby mushrooms.

The other has thin, long mushrooms.

The only difference between these cakes is that the first cake is 1 pint and was packed down a little. Second cake was only a half pint cake and was loosely packed with substrate.

Im thinking what causes this is how you pack your substrate, keeping it loose give you thin long mushrooms, dense substrate gives you smaller thicker mushrooms.

Let me hear your facts/opinions on this.

It was from a multispore syringe right. There is lots of different substrains in there which cause the different shapes and sizes.

Should also roll your cakes in vermiculite

I dont see any holes in your fc? Doesn't look like theres enough fae, not bad looking mushies, but you might want to look into making a sgfc

Do you have perlite or anything under that foil?

Not true in the least bit.

Mushroom size has a lot to do with genetics, nutrient content, available moisture, etc...but not how the substrate was packed.

Warmer temps will often produce hollow stems, while cooler temps will often produce denser, meatier, less hollow fruits.

Multispore Genetic Crapshooty Lottery, ir MGCL.  You are right, it is a strange, yet normal "phenomenon".

I can see FAE being a problem, as it looks like there are no holes in those tiny chambers.

OP you mushrooms need tons of constant fresh air, so there is tons of evaporation happening at substrate level.

how often do you mist/fan the cakes?
